WELLFLEET - Proprietor of Sal's Place
Jack Papetsas, 79, of Wellfleet, died on Wednesday, July 8, at Seashore Point in Provincetown. He was the husband of Lora (Abrahamson) Papetsas.
Born in Orange, N.J., on Jan. 22, 1930, he was the son of the late George and Mildred (Sirrocco) Papetsas. Jack was a self-made success, starting from a very early age. From the time he was a boy he worked to help support himself and his family. He delivered ice, worked on a bread truck, worked in a grocery store, delivered the Saturday Evening Post and helped his mother check coats at a hotel in New York City.
During WW II he served in the Army as a medic following medical training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. During the Korean War he served in the Coast Guard, eventually being stationed in Provincetown and then settling here.
For many years he worked construction during the winter and helped build many of the high schools on the Cape. He would proudly proclaim that he laid the first brick in the construction of Nauset Regional High School in Eastham. Among his several jobs was that of a commercial fisherman on the "Peter & Linda." He worked at the A-House tending bar, which gave him the opportunity to meet many of the celebrities who spent time in Provincetown over the years. In 1962 he began working for Sal Del Deo, at Sal's restaurant in the West End of Provincetown. In 1964 he moved from Provincetown to Wellfleet, bought the fishing boat called the "Naviator" and remained captain until 1988. In 1985 he met Lora Abrahamson while she was vacationing with family in Wellfleet. They were married in 1987 and together they bought Sal's restaurant late in 1988. They had one son, Alexander, who was born in 1992.
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Papetsas leaves two other sons, Thad Papetsas and his wife Julie of Provincetown and Brock Papetsas of Provincetown; and two grandchildren, Julianne and Dimitri Papetsas. He was the brother of the late George Papetsas. He also was the foster son of the late Junior and Jennie Lomelo and leaves his two foster sisters, Lorraine Landau of Bernardsville, N.J., and Ronnie Ericson of Tampa, Fla.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated last Saturday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wellfleet. Jack's favorite charity was St. Jude Hospital for children, so memorial contributions in his honor are being made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or at www.stjude.org. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
