• Obituary, , The Cape Codder in The Cape Codder
Steven B. Paine, also affectionately known as Bavis, died on June 4th, 2010. A native of South Wellfleet and a free spirit, he was well known and liked throughout the area. Born at Cape Cod Hospital, Steve lived most of his life on the Cape. As a young teenager he was a natural horseman and would often ride bareback throughout the woods and town. When he got his drivers license, Steve loved to ride motorcycles with his friends and go on road trips. Once, he rode as far as Arizona, where he stayed to live for awhile. He also made a cross-country trip in a pickup truck with his brother, David, camping out along the way. Steve always knew how to have a good time. For 17 years Steve captained the sea scalloper, Ocean Bird, out of Wellfleet Harbor. More recently, he became interested in aquaculture and raised the famed Wellfleet Oysters on his grant. Steve took oyster farming very seriously and researched world-wide for the best techniques in growing and cultivating oyster seed. When he became too ill to work, his brother, David took over the grant and often brought Steve along to observe the ongoing work. This was his greatest enjoyment. Steve is survived by his father, Abbott Otis Paine of South Wellfleet, and siblings, David O. Paine and Joanne Gensler of South Wellfleet, and Virginia Davis of Harwich. He also leaves two nephews, Scott N. Davis of New Bedford and Nathan W. Davis of Orleans, and two nieces, Correnda Gensler and Sarah Gensler of Clintondale, NY, as well as two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Steve was predeceased by his mother, Patricia (Bavis) Paine. A memorial service will be held on Sat. June 19th at 2pm on Indian Neck at Breakwater Beach in South Wellfleet.
