Chatham native killed in sky-diving accident

CHATHAM \emdash A Navy diver and Chatham native was killed Monday in a sky-diving accident in Hawaii.

Kenneth Richard Owens was enjoying a recreational sky dive when his parachute malfunctioned, according to the Honolulu Star Bulletin newspaper. The 27-year-old Navy diver, who was based at Pearl Harbor, fell 13,000 feet and landed in a pond in Mokuleia on the north shore of the island of Oahu.

Owens, a 2001 graduate of Chatham High School, was scheduled to deploy to Iraq Tuesday, Frank Hinshaw, president of Skydive Hawaii told the Star Bulletin.

Owens is the son of David and Mary Owens of Chatham. His parents were traveling to Hawaii last night and could not be reached for comment.

"Our school is in mourning," said Chatham High School nurse Pat Vreeland.

The Owens family has deep roots in the small town. Owens' sister works as an office assistant for the high school athletic director, and his mother is a substitute teacher, Principal Paul Mangelinkx said last night.

Federal Aviation Administration officials investigating the accident believe Owens' parachute was not packed correctly, according the Hawaii TV station KGMB9. "He did have a good amount of knowledge of sky-diving, he packed his own chute, he was certified to jump himself," Hinshaw said.

Owens was in a four-person formation when his main parachute failed to open.

He was pulled from the pond about five minutes after he landed. Police and fire officials began resuscitation efforts before he was taken by emergency medical service personnel to Wahiawa General Hospital, Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha told the Star Bulletin.

Owens began jumping about a year ago with Skydive Hawaii and had done 85 to 95 jumps, Hinshaw told the Star Bulletin.

His love of sky-diving fit the overall athleticism that made him a sports standout growing up in Chatham.

"He was an amazingly talented athlete and a fierce competitor," said his lifelong friend, Andrew McMahon, of Boston. "You really were fortunate to have him on your team. At the same time, you felt lucky you did not have to play against him."

Owens played on the Chatham Blue Devils soccer, basketball and baseball teams.

"Everyone really looked up to him, even as an underclassman he was a leader on the team," McMahon said.

He joined the Navy after attending Westfield State College, where he graduated in 2005, McMahon said.

The Navy was a good fit for Owens, his friend said.

"He didn't want to be tied down to an office," McMahon said. "From everything I heard, he was really doing well in the Navy."

He loved fishing, boating and being on the water. During summers, Owens and a tight-knit circle of friends would work on commercial fishing boats, McMahon said.

Their class of 2001 was small, only about 48 students, his friend said. About a dozen of those were Owens' close friends.

"Now we're all scattered around the country and we're just in shock," McMahon said. "It's been a difficult few days. You cannot even describe how you felt, just a tremendous sense of sadness and loss."

Former fisherman began career in Provincetown

Clement Louis Ozon, 73, of Orleans, died peacefully on April 14 at the Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brewster after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was the husband of Maria Audiino Ozon for the past 45 years.

Mr. Ozon was born on the French island of St. Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Newfoundland. He was one of seven siblings who relocated with their parents to Orleans in 1952 when his father came to work for the French Cable Company.

Mr. Ozon began his commercial fishing career in Provincetown on the Captain Bill. After completing his military service in 1958 and becoming a U.S. citizen, he worked aboard several scallopers out of New Bedford until he retired in 1992.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Charles, of Orleans, and Phillip and his wife, Kristina, of Manchester, Conn.; four brothers, Henri, of Brewster, Lucien and Michel, of Orleans, and Roger, of Newfoundland; a sister, Jeanne Dunning, of Orleans and Delaware; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Genevieve Lewis of the Virgin Islands.

A mass of Christian burial was scheduled for 10 a.m., April 18, in St. Joan of Arc Church, Canal Road, Orleans, with burial to follow in Orleans Cemetery, Orleans.
