"W.L. Overhiser was one of the first farmers to sink wells for irrigation purposes. The water is pumped by steam power from four wells about 100 feet deep at once, which yield a continuous flow of about thirty-six miners' inches of water; the pumps used had five-inch valves, and are worked by a twelve-horse-power engine that consumes one-fourth of a cord of wood in ten hours.
This is the first attempt of its kind to use steam for hoisting water for irrigation purposes in the county; and the experiment will be watched with interest by the citizens. Will it pay? is the question to be solved." - An Illustrated History of San Joaquin County, California. 1890. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., p. 116

Faye R. Owens Jr.
Builder, fisherman, retired postal worker
CHATHAM — Faye R. Owens Jr., 80, died Jan. 11 from cancer at his home. He was the husband of Paula Owens.
Mr. Owens was born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Faye R. and Grace L. (Blackwell) Owens. After graduating from Fairhaven High School he served in the Army during the Korean conflict.
After moving to Cape Cod and starting his family, he worked as a builder, postal worker and fisherman. After retiring from the Postal Service, he worked at Meservey's Citgo and stripped gill nets for local fishermen.
A lover of animals, he was known in Chatham as one of the last "backyard farmers." He made several trips to Maine to buy and sell animals and was often seen with a baby duck or rabbit in his pocket. He loved freshwater fishing and hunting, a tradition he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Always fond of the ocean, he was rarely without a boat. In his early years one could find him on Pleasant Bay long raking, eeling, lobstering and scalloping. He had his last ride around Pleasant Bay on his 80th birthday.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Charles Richard of Harwich and David of Chatham; two daughters, Linda Anderson of Lake Bay, Wash., and Wendy of Harwich; three stepchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Brown of Orlando, Fla., and Kenneth of Soldotna, Ark.; his sister, Dale Keyes of Chatham; a stepbrother, Verne Hunt of East Harwich; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and a nephew.
He was predeceased by his son Richard Carl and great-granddaughter Lilly Owens.
A memorial service was held Jan. 18, at East Harwich Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Stony Hill Animal Clinic, East Harwich Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
