EASTHAM - Vernon Ward Nickerson, 86, died Nov. 16 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Mr. Nickerson was born in Orleans, a 10th generation descendant of William Nickerson and the second son of Adeline (Crowell) Nickerson and Roy Nickerson. He attended Eastham Elementary School and had many fond memories of the old schoolhouse. He graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College and earned a master's degree from Harvard University.
During World War 11, Mr. Nickerson served in Europe as a captain in the 7th Armored Division of the U.S. Army. There, he met his future wife, Ilse (Zech) Nickerson, whom he was married to for 52 years. After the war he remained in Germany to work as a civilian in counterintelligence with the U.S. Forces European Theater Headquarters.
He returned to the United States in 1947 and began a long career as an educator, primarily in Lexington, where he was head of the math department and coach of the math team. He retired from teaching in 1981.
During the summer of 1948, Mr. Nickerson began charter fishing from Boat Meadow Creek on his double-ender, the Eastham. He later operated the charter boats Lucky Lady and Nikki out of Rock Harbor and remained in the business until the early 1990s. He continued to enjoy fishing in the bay with his son and grandchildren, and especially enjoyed trips to Billingsgate.
Mr. Nickerson was active in the Eastham Historical Society serving as treasurer for many years. He also was a longtime volunteer at Eastham Public Library. His love of gardening was well known, as he tended two garden plots and a large blueberry patch. Anyone visiting would most often leave with some piece of his bountiful crops.
He is survived by his son, Eric Nickerson of Windham, N.H.; his daughters, Annette Nickerson of North Andover and Ina O'Reilly of Windham; his sister, Irene Roy of Orleans; his brother Leonard J. Brewer Jr. of Orleans; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his brother Raymond Nickerson and his sister Muriel (Brewer) Snider.
A memorial service will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans Saturday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Eastham Historical Society School House Museum, P.O. Box 8, Eastham, MA 02642.
