Barbara N. Wright
Cape Cod native, teacher
ORLEANS \emdash Barbara N. Wright, 87, a lifelong Cape Codder, died at her Orleans home Dec. 17.
Daughter of Raymond and Marion (Eldredge) Nickerson and the second of five sisters, she was born and raised at the family home in Orleans Center now occupied by the Red Balloon Toy Shop.
Educated in the Orleans public schools, she went on to graduate from Tufts University. She taught third grade at Orleans Elementary School where she not only inspired her students academically but also exposed them to her passions for music and bird watching. Many of her former students considered her to be their favorite teacher.
She advanced to become supervisor of elementary education for the Nauset Region and later helped establish and was director of the Clinical Teaching Center in Wellfleet, a school dedicated to helping students with learning disabilities.
She enjoyed fishing, shellfishing and going to the beach on Town Cove and Nauset Inlet. She owned and operated several boats culminating in her 20-foot Seacraft Barbs Baby. She was also an accomplished pianist.
She is survived by two sons, Bob and Larry Wilcox, both of Orleans; two sisters, Harriet Schluter and Jane Walsh; and three granddaughters. She is predeceased by her sisters, Edith Gill and Ann Munoz-Mellowes.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Courthouse at the Old Jailhouse Tavern in Orleans Friday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Donations in her memory may be made to: Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, Hospice & Palliative Care, 434 Route 134, Suite G-1, South Dennis, MA 02660.
