"Mr. Newcomb lived with his parents at Ship Harbor N.S. until he was twenty-one. In the fall of 1835, he took passage with Capt. Nathaniel Atwood and went to Provincetown; lived on Long Point for three years. In the autumn of 1838 he was naturalized and was, as he said, "a true born whitewashed Yankee ever since." He was a master mariner; for twenty-eight years went on voyages to Grand Banks and Bay Chaleur; during winter months made trading voyages to the West Indies. Later he became part owner in the schooner "Rough and Ready and also in the Allie B. Snow. As master of these he engaged in fishing for six years -- in fact engage in the fishing business nearly all his life. He was an honest, upright and temperate man with a genial and happy disposition, retaining all of his faculties up to the time of his death, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eliza A. Emery. His wife died at the home of her son, Robert Newcomb." 32
