Marriage Notes (Micajah Young)
Susie's diary for 1875 was for sale on eBay in Feb 2007.
excerpts in the sale description:
This is the diary[pub 1875] of Susie Young who was married to a sailor by the name of Micajah Young. Susie was born on February 11th, 1843 and her birth name is Susie Newcomb. She was born in the town of Quincy. Micajah was born on May 19th, 1836 in the town of Orleans on Cape Cod. The two were married on April 16th, 1873. Her diary represents the year 1875 and takes place while they were living in Boston Massachusetts.
The diary really gives the reader an incredible insight to what life was like for a sailor's wife, as Micajah has to leave home several times during the course of this year, traveling on board the schooner "George Tarbell." Through-out her diary she talks about missing him deeply and sometimes she goes weeks without any letters, wondering if he ever made it to land. Eventually towards the end of the diary they end up buying a home on the Cape and she seems much happier. Best way to show you what Susie's life is like is to quote from her own words, as follow;
1875
"January 17th,
Cold today. We have been to church all day. Mr. Murry preached this afternoon. Mr. Young and myself at home this evening. I have been writing to Bennie Ward. Micajah wrote to James Crosby and mother Cole. He has been aboard the vessel today."
"January 19th,
A very pleasant day this afternoon. I went to see Lizzie. Saw her. Had a nice call. She is going to Quincy tomorrow. From there I was on board the George Tarbell, a very nice vessel. Staid to supper. Came home with my husband. He has the face ache and went to bed early. Letter from mother."
"January 25th,
Pleasant and not quite so cold. Have been washing. Have had a letter from Maria and one from Abbie Cole. I have had a present of a hood from Mary Hill. John brought it this afternoon. I have been packing Micajah's clothes and getting them ready for sea. At home this evening. Lizzie's birthday, 31 years old."
"February 1st,
A beautiful day. Have been washing the clothes, dried splendid. Micajah has come home very tired. They expect to sail tomorrow. I shall feel very lonely after he is gone."
"February 4th,
Pleasant today. Micajah sailed this morning. I am very lonely now he is gone and I am afraid they will have a cold time before they get into warm weather."
"February 11th,
A snow storm this morning. It turned to rain this afternoon and is raining hard this evening. Just a week since Micajah sailed. It seems like a month. My birthday, 32 years old today. It does not seem like it."
"March 4th,
A stormy day. Snow storm all day. Cleared off just at night. Aunt Mary staid tonight on account of the storm. Four weeks today since Micajah sailed. I wonder if he has arrived."
"March 8th,
A thick snow storm this morning but it cleared off at noon and is pleasant tonight. I wonder what the reason is that I do not have any letters from anyone. How I should like to hear from the cape or from the folks from Attleboro. I expect Lizzie here tomorrow."
"March 12th,
A lovely day but very bad walking. It is warm and spring like. Lizzie called today. She went to the point and is going to stay all night to Aunt Mary's. I saw the arrival of Schooner George S. Tarbell in Cadiz (Spain?) in yesterday's paper. Jimmie sent it to me by Lizzie."
"April 2nd,
Another pleasant day but it looks like rain tonight. Only one letter from Micajah. I am looking every day for another. I have made up my mind to go to housekeeping at the Cape."
"April 24th,
Home, home again. How glad I am. It is evening and we are sitting round the table in the dining room. Aunt Hattie, Jennie and myself. I have seen the clearance of G.S. Tarbell in the paper tonight. Got home at noon, very pleasant. Had a nice time while away. Hope Micajah will get home safe."
"May 11th,
Pleasant and warm. I have been at home all day. I am looking for Micajah every day. I hope he will soon be here. He has been out 38 days today."
"May 19th,
It has been pleasant and rainy today. I have been at home all day. It is Micajah's birthday, 42 year old. He was in hopes he would be at home. I do not know where he can be. Perhaps the vessel is lost but I hope not. I hope he will be spared many years."
"May 22nd,
Pleasant and rain. Received a letter from my husband for me to come to Gloucester this afternoon and had another telegram saying come a five o'clock train. I got ready and left home at 4 ½ o'clock and tonight I am in Gloucester. Micajah met me at the depot."
"May 23rd,
Pleasant and warm. Am enjoying myself very much. Was glad Micajah has got home. Have made two calls, one at Mr. Story and Mrs. Snyder's. Very pleasant calls. Have had a good many here to look at the vessel. The edging was very handsome."
"June 1st,
Pleasant, no rain although we need it very much. Moved the vessel to the neck this morning. Went to Mrs. Story's spent the day and am here tonight. Could not go on board the vessel was so high from the wharf. Mrs. S. Rose and myself went to the city this evening."
"June 3rd,
Pleasant today. Went to Mrs. Story's to stay until I go home. I do not like the Captain's wife at all. Micajah will be here nights."
"June 4th,
Pleasant. Am having a nice time. Am going home tomorrow. Wish I could stay longer. I like it here very much. Micajah will go home for a few days then will be off again and I shall be so lonely."
"June 18th,
Rainy all day. Had a letter from Lizzie Ward. Had two letters from Micajah. He is sick and has left the vessel. Is going to Orleans to make a visit and has written for me to come. Am going tomorrow if nothing happens. Wrote to Maud, wrote to Rose Chase."
"July 2nd,
Pleasant. Left Emma's right after dinner to go to Capt. Hall's. I was not very well in the afternoon. Capt Hall brought us to Harwich after tea then we took the stage for Chatham. Was very much surprised to find Nellie Swift and husband there."
"July 6th,
Pleasant. Today our good time is over. We must separate. We came to Orleans and Nell and I are going home. Uncle Charles brought us over to Orleans. Micajah went to Mrs. Taylor's this afternoon. I wanted to go up so much but he would not let me. I do not believe we shall ever go to house keeping."
"July 24th,
Pleasant and warm. Started for the Cape at four o'clock this afternoon. Met Aunt Abbie Williams at the depot, so it was very pleasant to have a company when we got here, who should we meet but Capt. Taylor. He came down on the same train. Our things were all in the house when we got here."
(At this point from July 28th to August 6th the pages are blank. Before that she has every page full of entries. After August 6th every page is again full until December and there are only a few pages filled then.)
"September 18th,
Pleasant but cold and blowey. Micajah has gone to the island and I was alone till a little after five then Herman called with his wife and children, staid to tea."
"October 4th,
Pleasant. Micajah has gone to Wellfleet to go fishing. Gone in the same vessel with Josiah. Staid all night will Ella. Have been stitching some today. Anna went to Tauten this morning."
"November 2nd,
Cloudy this morning. Left for Quincy quarter past nine. Took possession of land at ten o'clock. Saw Lizzie went to Uncle Thomson's was there to dinner. Maria, Carrie, George, Lizzie and myself. Lizzie and I staid this afternoon. I went over to Dedham to get deed recorded. Sold land to J. Ba___"
"December 24th,
Pleasant. Micajah has gone to the beach tonight with some others to watch a wreck come a shore but it did not. It is snowing hard tonight."
"December 31st,
Foggy this morning but the sun shown before noon. Tomorrow is New Year's Day. I never shall forget last New Years Eve. Jennie and I went to watch meeting to watch the New Year in and the old one out. Tonight I am at the cape house keeping, not well. Can not go out, all for the best. M. is in Boston. Thought I should hear from him."
