Sandwich man dies in police shoot-out
Cape Cod Times, by Associated Press and other reports
August 05, 2009
MALDEN - A suspect shot by police after a traffic stop in Malden turned violent has died.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said 20-year-old Alexander Nesom of East Sandwich died yesterday morning at a hospital.
Police pulled over a Toyota Camry with three men inside Monday suspecting that it had been stolen.
When officers approached, the driver went into reverse, then switched to drive, striking two officers.
The officers' injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Leone says the officers fired once each, striking Nesom in the leg and shoulder. Twenty-four-year-old Mark Dwyer of Worcester was arrested at the scene.
Meanwhile 29-year-old James Calo of Malden fled and was captured after cops caught up with him at about 6 a.m. yesterday. Both have pleaded not guilty to possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Their attorneys claim the two men, who were passengers in the vehicle, did not know the car was stolen.
According to a story in today's Boston Globe, Nesom, had a long history of drugs and violence and in 2006 accused of trying to kill his father with a baseball bat at their Sandwich home.
The Globe also reports in October 2006, he was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He was allegedly arrested on June 18 on animal cruelty charges and in April on domestic assault and battery charges - both incidents reported in Sandwich.

Boston Globe
MALDEN - The driver of the car, 20-year-old Alexander S. Nesom, had a long history of drugs and violence and was once accused of trying to kill his father with a baseball bat at their Cape Cod home in 2006. Beside him sat Mark Dwyer, 24, of Worcester, a pest-control worker with two drug cases on his record. In the back seat was James Calo, a local man with convictions for larceny and drug trafficking, who police say was carrying capped needles and two bags of heroin in the waistband of his pants.
Police who pulled over the white Toyota Monday evening around 7 knew none of that. On a hunch, a patrolling officer had run the plates on the car, learning it had been reported stolen in Brockton. And as the vehicle came slowly to a stop on Salem Street, a busy residential road, the situation seemed manageable, if not routine.
Yet when the officer pulled Dwyer from the car, the encounter took a dire and ultimately deadly turn. Nesom allegedly chucked the car into reverse and barreled backward, ramming the cruiser and knocking the officer to the ground, allowing Dwyer to escape. As two patrol cars arrived at the scene to box in the Toyota, Nesom gunned the engine and surged forward, striking two officers and their vehicles in an attempt to get away, authorities said. Fearing he would run them down again, authorities said, the officers fired single shots at close range, fatally wounding the driver.
Yesterday, authorities defended the officers who fired on Nesom as well-trained and decorated veterans who used their weapons in self-defense.
"Our officers were involved in a very difficult event here," Malden Police Chief Kenneth Coye said during a press conference at Malden police headquarters. "Things happened very fast here, and I believe they acted to save their lives."
Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said the officers, who were recovering at home after being treated for minor injuries at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, "acted in conformity with their training."
"They were trying to save their own lives and those of their colleagues,'' he said. "They had been hit and were in danger of being hit again."
Leone said the officers, whom he declined to identify, will be "back on duty as soon as possible." State Police are investigating the shooting.
Nesom, who had an extensive criminal history over the past three years and had pleaded not guilty last month in Barnstable District Court to assault with a dangerous weapon, was shot in the thigh, police said, but the bullet apparently struck a major artery, causing heavy blood loss. He was taken to the hospital, where he died yesterday morning.
At Nesom's home in Sandwich, a man who answered the door identified himself as Nesom's father but declined to comment.
After Dwyer fled the arrest scene, police launched an overnight manhunt and sent emergency phone warnings to more than 3,000 area homes. Calo provided a description, and an officer spotted Dwyer about 6:40 a.m. along Eastern Avenue in Malden. There were bloodstains on his shorts, and his forearms and hands were scraped, according to a police report filed yesterday in Malden District Court. Police were able to identify him quickly because he had the name Dwyer tattooed on his forearm, according to the report.
Investigators said yesterday that the connections between the three young men and the reason for their presence in Malden remained vague, but that drugs seemed to provide a common denominator. In a police report, officers said Calo told them he had bought drugs with the two other men.
Lawyers for Dwyer and Calo said their clients had nothing to do with the theft of the car, which was reported stolen Sunday in Brockton after its owner had left it running and unattended.
A lawyer for Calo, 29, who was arraigned yesterday on charges of drug possession and receipt of a stolen motor vehicle, said his client had been in the car for only 20 minutes before the confrontation and did not know the vehicle was stolen. When arrested, Calo was agitated and angrily told police, "Those guys almost got me killed."
Police officials acknowledged that stops that initially appear routine can quickly go awry. The officer who made the initial stop Monday immediately called for backup, once he learned the vehicle was stolen. And when he spotted Dwyer moving frantically in the front seat, as if trying to hide something, he proceeded "with a heightened sense of danger," Coye said.
Leone praised the first officer on the scene for "good police work" in locating the stolen car.
Nesom, according to records of the Sandwich Police Department, had been arrested June 18 on animal cruelty charges and in April on domestic assault and battery charges. In October 2006, he was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
