Captain Martin Nelson, a resident of Provincetown for the past 31 years, was killed almost instantly Sunday morning, aboard his flounder dredger, the Harry and Thelma, when he was caught in the ropes of his hoisting apparatus. His arm and hand were crushed to pulp and his head was smashed by the revolving hoister.
The engine was topped as soon as he was caught in the ropes, but not in time to save him. He died before the boat could reach the shore. Captain Nelson was born in Sweden 51 years ago. He was a member of the life saving crew before he took up flounder fishing. He is survived by a widow and eight children."

WELLFLEET \emdash Martin Nerber was the talk of the Lower Cape yesterday, even though the generous Wellfleet man died Nov. 5.
Nerber, 60, an avid reader, bequeathed $200,000 to his local library and $75,000 to the senior center in Wellfleet. Recipients got the good news about Nerber's will by letter this week.
"We're quite overwhelmed and very pleased," library director Elaine McIlroy said yesterday. Nerber visited the library at least once a week or more often, she said. "We're really touched that a library is what meant so much to him."
Nerber's generosity spread even outside his town to stun the Nauset School Committee Thursday night when members learned that Nerber also gave $100,000 to the high school for college scholarships. The school will set up a scholarship fund in his name, School Supt. Richard Hoffmann said.
Nerber also left another $50,000 to the Haiti Club, an after-school club at Nauset linked for the past 10 years to an island community in Haiti.
"This caught me completely by surprise," said Lisa Brown, who teaches world music and diversity at the high school and leads the Haiti Club. "I just want to specially thank the Nerber family for their overwhelming kindness."
Nerber was a lifelong friend, as was his family, Brown said, but he had never been with her to Haiti. Brown and Wellfleet artist Ellen LeBow started visiting and helping the town of Matenwa on the island of LaGonave more than 12 years ago. Their work has touched lives in both countries to the point that last month's Cape fundraiser, planned before the recent earthquake, raised more than $50,000 to continue the program and help with earthquake relief.
Each year for about 10 years, Brown also has led a few carefully selected Nauset students \emdash 20 in all \emdash to Matenwa to help at the arts and vocational center, created by the Wellfleetians, and at the community school.
At the Nauset school, usually about 30 kids volunteer and help the Haiti Club raise money to support the Matenwan school's lunch program.
The bequest means that the Nauset club can help support the school's food program long-term, Brown said. For a third of the 220 kids at the school, their school lunch \emdash rice, beans, a boiled dumpling, vegetables in season and bean sauce \emdash is the only hot meal they get.
Sally Nerber of Wellfleet said yesterday that she didn't know why her son made his bequests but she thought he had made good choices. He didn't finish high school himself, but, she believes, he understood the importance of a good education.
"He was a very intelligent guy," she said. "He wasn't expecting to die and I think he wanted to do something constructive with his funds."
According to Nerber's obituary, he was born in Norwood and studied ballet from age 16 into his late 20s, dancing with companies in Philadelphia, Buffalo and Boston, as well as London and Amsterdam.
He moved to Camden, Maine, in the 1980s and studied photography there until he lost sight in one eye due to illness. He moved to Wellfleet and developed a great love of fishing for trout and striped bass.
