Marriage Notes (Hannah Knowles)
"Jonathan Sparrow died intestate prior to 10 Oct 1769, on which date his widow Hannah was appointed administatrix of his estate (Barnstable Probates 10:217).
On 1 May 1770 Solomon Sparrow was appointed guardian for "Elizabeth Smith, a minor Daughter to Jonathan Sparrow Jr late of Eastham in the County of Barnstable Yeoman Deceased." (ibid., 15:53)
At the same court Solomon Sparrow was also appointed guardian for Jabez, Lois, Isaac, and Sarah Sparrow, minor sons and daughters of Jonathan Sparrow, Jr., Deceased (ibid., 15:54-57.) Hannah Sparrow, widow, of Eastham, at the same time was appointed guardian for Joshua, Jonathan, and Stephen, minor sons of Jonathan Sparrow, Jr., Deceased (ibid 15:58-60).
On 8 May 1777 James Otis, Esq., Judge of Probate in the COunty of Barnstable, approved an order of settlement reading in part as follows: "I do hereby Order and Assign unto Jabez Sparrow of Eastham in the County of Barnstable aforsd and Eli--[illegible] Son of Jonathan Sparrow Late of Eastham in Sd County of Barnstable Deceased Intestate to sell all those Pieces and Parcels of Land, with the Buildings and Appurtenances" -- to pay charges of the settlement -- "then to pay Isaac Sparrow, Stephen Sparrow, Jonathan Sparrow, Sarah Sparrow, Louis Sparrow and to Elizabeth Smith wife of Benjamin Smith Children of the Sd Deceased" (ibid 17: 434-436.
It is therefore evident that Benjamin Smith's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonathan Sparrow, Jr., of Eastham by his first wife ELizabeth Heard, and that she was married to Benjamin Smith prior to 1 May 1770." 35
