BRONX PHYSICIAN DEAD BULLET HOLE IN SKULL
Police Think a Watchman Killed Dr. John Matheson.
TOLD EMPLOYER OF A FIGHT
He Then Vanished from the Buildings
He Was Guarding\emdash Workmen Found the Body.
Dr. John Matheson, who was well known in the Bronx, and mentioned oniy a few months ago as a possible candidate for Coroner, was found dead with a bullet hole in the back of his head, near the corner of 175th Street and Fulton Avenue early yesterday morning.
All the circumstances of the case point to murder. The police theory is that he was shot in a dispute with an Italian watchman named Antonio Calare. The
watchman has disappeared, leaving no trace behind.
Dr. Matheson, who was 35 years oia and unmarried, boarded with Mrs. May Pyne at 1,307 Bristow Street. Police Inspector Titus and Detective Sergt. Price traced Dr. Matheson's movements from the time he left his boarding house, about 8 o'clock Thursday evening:, saying that he did not expect to return until early mornng.
He visited several patients, and was seen in the vicinity of 177th Street and Third Avenue about midnight. Later he went to a saloon at 174th Street and Third Avenue, where he met Henry Cronin of 4,003 Third Avenue and James Moran of 876 East 173d Street, both guards on the elevated road.
Dr. Matheson had no money, and, according to Cronin, who knew him slightly, he tried to borrow a dollar from him. Cronin saw that he was under the influence of liquor, and refused, but offered to buy drinks. The three had several drinks together and left the place about 2 o'clock. Dr. Matheson was seen by Policeman Bartsch, who knew him and advised him to go straight home.
At 4 o'clock yesterday morning John La Velle, a contractor living at 1,057 East 176th Street, was awakened by his watchman, Antonio Calare, who explained in broken English that there had been a fight at the buildings at 175th Street and Fulton Avenue which La Velle is erecting and that he had fired off his revolver. The Italian was very much excited, according to Mr. La Velle, who, thinking there had been nothing more serious than a drunken row and that the Italian had used his gun to frighten the intruders, told him to go back to his job and returned to bed.
But the Italian did not return to the buildings, as instructed by his employer, and when Dominick Parr and Clement Graves, two laborers, arrived at 7 o'clock yesterday morning they found the watchman gone, and the body of a man lying on a pile of lumber. Thinking the stranger asleep they tried to arouse him, and in doing so discovered that he was dead, and that he had a wound in the back of his head.
A search for the missing watchman was immediately begun, but no trace of him had been discovered up to a late hour last night. Inspector Titus said that there was no doubt that on his way home Dr. Matheson had passed the buildings at 175th Street and Fulton Avenue, and got in a dispute with the watchman Calare, who had used his revolver, and that when he saw he had shot the man ran to his employer and told him as well as he was able what had happened. Then fearing the consequences he ran away. Mr. La Velle said that Calare had been In his employ for about a year, and that he had always found him trustworthy and honest.
Dr. Matheson, who was a native of Prince Edward Island, Canada, came to this city some years ago to study medicine, and was graduated from the medical department of the University of the Citv of New York with the class of 1800. It was rumored that he was engaged to marry a Miss M. Dlxon, a public school teacher in the Bronx. An autopsy on the body showed that death was due to the bullet wound.
