Whaling captain's story illustrates hardship, success

DGARTOWN \emdash When William Martin decided to make his life on the sea more than 100 years ago, he set sail toward history.
In the 1880s, as the nation enjoyed an enduring time of peace after a costly civil war ended some 20 years before, Martin established himself as one of just a handful of black whaling captains in America.
Martin's tale is one of early poverty and unlikely success. It also illustrates the hardships of a whaling industry that could mangle men or kill them, but also offered opportunities to black men not found in other occupations of the time.
Capt. William Martin was born in Edgartown on July 17, 1830, just one generation away from slavery. His mom and his grandmother, a former slave, raised him in Edgartown, where he found his way into the vibrant maritime work force based there, according to research by the African American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard.
"According to Dukes County Jailhouse records, his mother was in and out of jail for small infractions," said Elaine Weintraub, a Martha's Vineyard Regional High School history teacher and author of "Lighting the Trail: The African American Heritage of Martha's Vineyard."
In her research on Martin, she also found that his grandmother Nancy was considered a witch by many in town and she would sell trinkets and other things to sailors in Edgartown.
"If they (the sailors) didn't buy her gifts and charms, she would curse them and their voyages," Weintraub said.
The early years
A young William Martin was known in town because of the dubious behavior of his mother and grandmother.
"They would have known him. He did go to school in Edgartown and became a skilled writer," Weintraub said. "In those days, there were classes for girls on how to sew sails and for boys on maritime navigation."
Martin was accepted early on in the community because of his natural abilities on the ocean and his writing skills.
"You see, Edgartown then wasn't the Edgartown of today," she said. "It was a raucous town of sailors from all over the country and Europe."
After Martin began finding some early success in the maritime industry as a ship's log keeper, he also found love. An American Indian woman named Sarah Brown caught his eye. She had been a live-in maid in Edgartown.
In 1857, Martin returned from a successful voyage aboard the Edgartown vessel Europa and he and Sarah married. Between voyages, Martin lived with Sarah and her family on Chappaquiddick on land designated for American Indians called the Chappaquiddick Plantation.
Life was hard in the small ethnically mixed community on the small island that now adjoins Edgartown by ferry and an occasional strip of beach.
In her book, Weintraub cites an 1861 Report to the Governor on the Condition of Indians in the Commonwealth.
One of the reasons for the high mortality rate in the small American Indian community, according to the report, was that the "destitution, want and suffering" in which many of the residents lived was caused by the abject poverty of the residents.
"He walked between two worlds really," Weintraub said. "It was a balancing act. Both Sarah and William Martin would work and live for sometime away from home on Chappaquiddick. He would be on voyages and she would work for families in Edgartown."
They had no children, but owned a relatively simple two-story home on Chappaquiddick, indicating his successes in the Edgartown maritime industry.
They never moved to Edgartown despite his later success as a captain.
Stuart Frank, senior curator at the Whaling Museum of New Bedford, describes the regional whaling industry as one of promise and success for American Indians and black Americans.
"The strength of the Quaker religion on Nantucket and, to a lesser extent Martha's Vineyard, made it more likely for African-Americans to take part in the industry," Frank said.
A life remembered
In 1907, Sarah and William Martin celebrated their 50-year anniversary, which was recorded cordially in the Vineyard Gazette of July 11, 1907, Weintraub said.
In the article, Captain Martin's whaling skills are praised and all of the ships he captained over the years out of Edgartown harbor are noted. It also states that Martin was, at the time of the article, a paralytic and had been so for the previous seven years.
He died later that year, according to Weintraub's research of town and county records. He is buried in the Chappaquiddick Cemetery under a large grave stone.
Over the past 100 years, Captain Martin's story faded away like the whaling industry itself which was replaced by yachts and high-end sail boats in Edgartown harbor.
But in the last several years, after Weintraub discovered Martin's story as part of her research for the African-American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard, Martha's Vineyard's only black whaling captain has become the source of many high school student projects.
"He got my attention on the trail," said Andrew Silva, a student in Weintraub's history class. "It's important to recognize the African-Americans who have made great changes in the world."
Black whaling/merchant captains
In Nantucket, Captain Absalom Boston sailed ships in the early 1800s.
In New Bedford, Pardon Cook, and Paul Cuffe, sailed and owned ships between the 18th and 19th centuries.
In San Francisco, Captain William T. Shorey sailed whaling ships out of this West Coast port in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
