General:
The "Commerce," Solomon H. Lombard master, returned from a mackerel fishing trip and anchored off Truro in good weather. The next day, the townfolk became concerned at not seeing their neighbors ashore, and boarded the vessel. No one was aboard, and the boat was missing. The boat was soon found, with some damage, and over 3 weeks the 10 seamen were fouind drowned, from Provincetown to Barnstable. "How a crew of ten active men, many, if not all, expert swimmers, could all be drowned in smooth water, so near the shore, probably having the usual complement of oars, thwarts, etc. -- how the leak occurred, and why it could not have been stopped, with many other queries, will ever remain a mystery."

COMMENTS: On 2 October 1660 Thomas Lumbert Sr. of Barnstable complained to the court that "Jedediah, his son, hath carried stubbornly against his said father, and that he is by him freed, provided he do dispose himself in some honest family with his father's consent, which if he shall neglect to do, the Court have deputed Mr. Hinckley to dispose of him to some honest, godly family, with his and his father's consent" [ PCR 3:201].
