Notes
General:
On 3 October 1662, Barnstable ordered that the sons of all the present inhabitatants shall successively be received inhabitants and allowed equal town privileges in the Commons, and such other privileges as belong to the present inhabitants as a township, at the day of their marriage, or at the age of 24, whichever shall happen first. The following persons were thereupon admitted: ... Edward Lewis, John Lewis.Medical:
John was killed with Capt. Pierce in the Rehoboth battle, 1676. The fall of Captain Pierce of Scituate and nearly all of his force of 63 England and 20 friends Indians at Rehoboth on March 26, 1676, dealt an especially sad blow to the Cape towns. The company was decoyed by the wily foe into ambush and surrounded by 500 Indians. All fought heroically, but with the exception of eight Englishmen and 10 Indians, all were slain. Barnstable lost six men: Lt. Samuel Fuller, John Lewis, Eleazer Clapp, Samuel Linnett, Samuel Childs and Samuel Boreman. The Indian Amos, who escaped and returned to his home in Barnstable, and who was one of the Barnstable quota, has justly been commended. Not only had he fought bravely to the last, standing by his unfortunate captain, but his escape was by a worthy strategem. Seeing that the hostile Indians had blackened their faces so they might distinguish themselves from the Indians accompanying Captain Pierce, Amos wet some powder and blackened his own face when his safety became otherwise hopeless, and thus passed through the midst of the enemy without detection and returned in safety to Barnstable.
On 3 fifth month (July) 1676, Shuball Dimacke deposed that he heard John Lewis Sr., the son of George Lewis Sr., living at Barnstable, say, some time before he went out last to war, that he would leave what he had with Samuel Bryant to order for him; and if he came not again, he should take all. On the same date, Hannah and Mary Davis deposed that they heard him say the above, but that Samuell Bryant should help maintain his [Lewis's] mother, along with the rest of his brothers, so long as she lived. Wakefield notes that these records prove that the statement that John married Margaret and left an only son (Mary Anderson, "Ancestry and Posterity of Joseph Smith and Emma Hale" p. 426) was in error. 27
