Notes
General:
Keeper of Billingsgate Light, 1849-1853
Barnstable Patriot, 19 Sep 1849
"We learn that Elisha Cobb has just been removed from the keeping of the Billingsgate light house, and Elisha Freeman, Jr. from that at Long Point, Provincetown! Two better light house keepers do not, nor never did, occupy such a position, on any coast. But these are two of the posts where our infamous slanderer of the Barnstable Bank attempted to pick up his material for his "Black Mail" charge against ourself last winter. Grinnell and his "traveling companion" put themselves in the keeping and under the guidance of that political pimp on their arrival in the county, and doubtless, were plied with the same string of lies which it sought to blacken our official reputation with. Well, let 'em take the rope!
In place of Cobb, a Mr. Krogman has been appointed, of whom we know nothing, except that he is not the man whom some of the whigs of the county recommended--and it is rumoured that Mr. Collector Greely does not altogether relish such interference with his prerogative by Mr. Grinnell. At Long Point, Mr. Derby has been restored. Of him we have nothing to say than that he was allowed to hold the same office from 1827 to 1847, twenty years--under a succession of democratic administrations being all the time their continual opponent and reviler--and is now, of course, a very fit man to be restored by theis present, "no-party" government. Besides, it is said that he is poor!--twenty years pap didn't fatten him."

Barnstable Patriot, 3 May 1853
"New Appointments.--We learn that the following apppointments of Light House Keepers in this District, have recently been made by the Secretary of the Treasury, viz:--
B. H. A. Collins, keeper of the Nauset Lights, in Eastham, in place of Henry Y. Hatch, removed.
Elisha Cobb, keeper of the Billingsgate Light, in place of Francis Krogman, removed.
Jesse Freeman, keeper of Long Point Light, Provincetown, in place of Charles Derby, removed.
Freeman L. Hickman, keeper of Mayo's Beach Lilght, in place of John Newcomb, removed."
