1. *Mercy Bacon (30 Jan 1689 - 18 Apr 1759)
       Marriage: 19 Mar 1719 - Barnstable, Massachusetts

Notes
Marriage Notes (Mercy Bacon)
"Thomas Joyce of Yarmouth, Mass., was one of the wealthiest men on Cape Cod. He and his wife were blessed with five beautiful daughters but his only son, Jeremiah, was crippled in childhood."

"Some printed sources state that Thomas Joyce had a first wife named Elizabeth Bent or Burt. However, Marshfield, Plymouth Co., Mass., records show that a different Thomas Joyce married in Marshfield, 31 October 1701, Elizabeth Bent and had two children, John and Abigail Joyce, who both matured and married in Marshfield. Thomas Joyce of Yarmouth was named in the wills of his father, Hosea Joyce, [Sr.] and by his brothers, John Joyce and Hosea Joyce, [Jr.], as well as in the petition of his half-sister's daughter, Mary Carsley, and in the distribution of the estate of his brother, Samuel Joyce, deceased."

"Thomas Joyce & Mercy Bacon were Married 19 of March 1719 as also James Berse & Mercy Fuller Married ye Same Day by Justice Bacon."

"Thomas and Mercy Joyce were members of the West Parish Church in Yarmouth and their children were baptized there as Jeremiah, Elizabeth, M[ercy], Mary, Dorcas and Sarah Joyce. Thomas's brother-in-law and sister, John and Dorothy (Joyce) Oats, were also members. In his will dated 3 October 1737, Thomas Joyce of Yarmouth, yeoman, gave half of his estate, both real and personal, to his beloved wife, Marcy Joyce, for her lifetime, and named her sole executrix. He listed his daughters as Elizabeth, Mercy, Mary, Dorcas and Sarah, and bequeathed 50 pounds to each as they became 18 years of age or were married. He gave his son, Jeremy, the remainder of his estate, real and personal, half at the age of 21 years, the rest when his mother died or remarried. Witnesses were Thomas Smith, John Oats and John Oats, Jr. The will was presented for probate 12 May 1743. The probate judge ruled that they widow, Mercy Joyce, was incapable of performing the duties of executrix and in her place appointed their son, Jeremiah Joyce, as administrator. The inventory, dated 25 May 1744, was taken by Jonathan Hallett, Ebenezer Taylor and Joseph Hamblen, and amounted to 606 pounds 18 sh, Onl Tenor. When son Jeremiah Joyce of Yarmouth made his will, 22 March 1755, probated 6 May 1755, he named his five sisters as Elizabeth Taylor, Marcy Hallett, Mary Joyce, Dorcas Taylor and Sarah Bray. Amos Otis reported in Barnstable Families that Thomas Joyce had a large family of girls noted for their beauty. His son, Jeremiah, was a cripple. In spite of his wealth, he became melancholy and committed suicide."

"Several accounts say that he had a first wife, 'm. 1710,' Elizabeth Bent or Burt; if so, we find no children of record or date ofher death. . . . He is named in the wills of his father, brothers John and Hosea, and in the petition of Mary Casely and the distribution of his brother Samuel Joyce."

Parents of Wilbraham, Mass.

Grad. Yale Coll., 1796; studied law and settled in Tolland, CT; has been a
Representative and Senator in the State Legislature; a Judge, and for many
years Pres. of the Tolland Bank. Four children.

The following tribute from the late William H. Wells, of Chicago, gives a
pleasant picture of the man and the times of Judge Stearns was one of the
deacons of the church which I attended during all the earlier years of my life.
His face was as familiar to me as that of my own father, and his portrait
recalls many pleasant memories of those far off days. His house was always
open Sabbath noons to those who lived too far away to go home between the
morning and afternoon services, and I was there many times. His family pew
was next to the pulpit, at the minister's left, but he always sat in the
deacons seat, directly in front of the pulpit. No man in Tolland was better
known or held in higher esteem than Judge Stearns.

Of the village of Tolland, his grandson writes: If there is any spot in this
wide, wide world, that I have a right to call my home, it is this little town
of Tolland, nestled up here among the rock-ribbed hills of Tolland Co. It was
in this peaceful, pleasant town, that Elisha Stearns spent his own peaceful,
useful and honorable life.
