A two-day ordeal of horror, faith and survival

By DOUG FRASER
STAFF WRITER
Badly sunburned and his voice hoarse from yelling at passing ships from a flimsy styrofoam life raft, Andrew Joseph was glad to be alive yesterday.

The 29-year-old Eastham man recounted the sudden capsizing of the scalloper Northern Wind off Nantucket on Monday - and the 50 hours of prayer, hope and despair that followed for him and his fellow crewman, Sean Balestraci, 32, of Gloucester.

Joseph and Balestraci spent a second night at Cape Cod Hospital last night after surviving two days on the open sea. Both were in stable condition by yesterday afternoon and described their ordeal over the telephone.

''Physically, I'm OK,'' said Joseph.

Psychologically, the scars of what they witnessed - the rapid change of fortune, from standing on the deck in the summer sun to clinging to the lid of a storage container in 56-degree water and watching their captain, Edward Smith, 36, of Deer Isle, Maine, slip from consciousness and drown - is a different story.

Their 45-foot steel-hulled vessel was towing a 9½-foot-wide steel scallop dredge from its midships when the dredge hung up on something about 9 a.m. Monday, Joseph said.

Whatever it was, it was big.

''The boat stopped dead in the water.'' said Joseph.

Smith decided to take the boat out of gear and drift back over the dredge to see if he could pull it free by going in the other direction, Joseph said. The boat may have drifted over the dredge, however, which then acted like an anchor, pulling the dredge lines taut and flipping the vessel.

Because boats like the Northern Wind have their dredge lines fastened at the middle of the boat, and not the stern, they are prone to being pulled over on their side, said Jim Kendall, a consultant with New Bedford Seafood who scalloped for 34 years, 18 as a captain.

Joseph said the capsizing was violent and sudden, with no time to send a distress signal.

As soon as he hit the water, Joseph kicked off his boots and shed his heavy foul weather jacket and pants, fearful they would weigh him down. He, Balestraci and Smith grabbed two 3-by-5-foot plastic fish vat lids floating nearby. They had to tread water to remain afloat.

Thin and wearing only a T-shirt and pants, Smith was shivering after just a few minutes, Joseph said.

''The first thing he said was 'I can't swim.' I gave him the vat cover I was holding and went over to the vat cover with Sean,'' said Johnson. The three men tried to stay close, but the current was strong and they drifted apart. A little later, the two saw Smith slip off the vat cover and disappear.

''We tried to get over to him,'' said Joseph.

Left on their own, the two men wondered why the vessel's emergency satellite beacon hadn't alerted the Coast Guard with their position. And, where was its canopied life raft equipped with food, water, and emergency gear that should have automatically inflated out of its capsule?

The vessel's last safety inspection was in 2003, said Coast Guard District 1 fishing vessel safety coordinator Robert Higgins. At the time, the Northern Wind's owner, Seth Wahlstrom of Eastham was given a list of what he needed for offshore survival and indicated he was going to purchase it, according to the Coast Guard. Wahlstrom could not be reached for comment this week.

Paddling over to the vessel provided the two men with a chilling answer: The raft and the emergency satellite beacon were likely trapped under the ship, in the rigging or superstructure.

For eight hours the two crewmen treaded water, supported only by the storage lids. Then, they found a life raft, although not one meant for the open ocean. Essentially, an oversized styrofoam life ring, with a net in the middle, it was intended only for use within a couple of miles of shore, where exposure isn't as much a factor.

Without water and shelter from the sun, the two men drifted away from where the Northern Wind had sunk two hours after capsizing.

Over the next two days, other fishing vessels passed maddeningly close, and the two kicked furiously after them, yelling until they grew hoarse. But diesel motors are noisy and fishing vessels rarely have idle moments where they can hear anything but the sound of the engine.

They felt lost, seemingly forgotten. But thoughts of home and family kept them alive.

''That's what kept us going, family and prayer,'' Joseph said.

Finally, on Wednesday morning, nearly 50 hours after the sinking and 63 miles east of Chatham, the two men spotted the Atlantic Queen, a fishing dragger out of Wakefield, R.I.

For two hours they chased the dragger as it worked slowly, towing its large net.

The men kicked, their foam life raft struggling to keep up. They yelled and yelled, trying to get the crew's attention.

''It seemed like every time we would get close, the tide would change and we'd be dragged away,'' Johnson said.

Ironically, their saving grace came when the captain put the engine into idle so that the crew could untangle a twisted net.

Their cries could now be heard over the engine noise and they were saved, their three-day ordeal over.
