Barbara Louise Johnson, 90
July 10, 2012 2:00 AM
YARMOUTH \emdash Barbara L. Johnson, a lifelong native of Cape Cod, passed away July 7 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA. Born at Cape Cod Hospital on Oct. 28, 1921, to Morris I. Johnson and Mary (Kane) Johnson, she traced her ancestry, on her paternal side, back to the pioneer Yelverton Crowe (Crowell), who was granted a tract of land in West Yarmouth in 1633.
After grammar school at the old West Yarmouth School, she attended the John Simpkins School in South Yarmouth, where she graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1940. As a member of the class of '40, she helped raise money for the D-Y High School Scholarship Fund. After graduating she worked for four years at Buttner's clothing store of Hyannis in the children's dept. In 1945, with the encouragement of her sister Abby she joined the Woman's Army Corps, where she served as a clerk/typist at Ft. Leavenworth, KA. She was discharged as a Cpl. in 1946. Barbara was a proud member of the American Legion, Yarmouth Post #197.
From 1947 to 1982 she was employed by the Town of Yarmouth as a secretary/clerk in the Assessors-Selectman's office, where she enjoyed helping folks conduct their town hall business.
Her interest in the arts was expressed by her oil painting. She enjoyed the hobby of painting Cape Cod scenes, seascapes and pet portraits, which she sold to the pet's owners in order to donate the proceeds to her church and other charities. She sang with the Cape Chorus in her earlier years, as well as with her own church choir, where she sang most of her adult life. Barbara became a member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church in 1934 at age 12. She went on to teach and supervise in the church school program for many years.
Barbara touched many people in her walk through life. She was loved and will be fondly remembered as a kind and gentle spirit by all who knew her. Family, church, friends, the arts and her job filled a happy life.
Barbara is survived by her loving and devoted sister Abby K. Johnson, of Yarmouth; sister-in-law Virginia K. Johnson of Rangeley, ME; nephews Steven K. Johnson of Yarmouth; Michael K. Johnson of Hyannis and Richard K. Johnson of Levittown, NY; also grandnieces Kerry, Elizabeth and Olivia. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her sister Carol M. Hunter, brothers Richard K. Johnson and Morris I. Johnson Jr.
Friends may call at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA, on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 1 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the West Yarmouth Congregational Church, 323 Route 28, West Yarmouth MA, 02673.

Dennisport man's body recovered off Wellfleet shore
By K.C. MYERS

August 02, 2008 6:00 AM
WELLFLEET — The body of a Dennisport carpenter and father of two was found in the water off Great Island early yesterday afternoon.
David Johnson, 56, of Mild Bay Circle in Dennisport had apparently been tending to his lobster pots in Cape Cod Bay sometime Thursday evening when he died, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said.
His death is considered accidental, O'Keefe said.
Johnson left his small cottage at 7:30 p.m. with his boat, the Salt Shaker, Thursday evening, according to one of his neighbors, Bernadette Pothier.
A finish carpenter by trade, lobster fishing out of Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis was Johnson's beloved hobby, according to another neighbor and friend, Alan Labrie.
"He called it his therapy," Labrie said.
Johnson usually tended to his pots in the evening and would be home by midnight, Pothier said.
But obviously something went terribly wrong.
John Shakliks, captain of the charter boat Luau, spotted Johnson's body around noon yesterday.
"At first, I thought it was a dead seal. It wasn't, and I wish it was," Shakliks said.
He had a party of four on board for a 4-hour fishing excursion that started at 9:30 and ended at 1:30 p.m. He estimated he was between 1½ to 2 miles west of Great Island when he came across the body.
Shakliks contacted the Coast Guard and remained nearby until Wellfleet Harbor Master Michael Flanagan came out to wait for Coast Guard officials to arrive from Provincetown.
Both Flanagan and Shakliks estimated Johnson's body had been in the water for between 12 and 24 hours.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Terrell said the agency was not searching for anyone reported missing at the time Johnson's body was found.
Johnson's 79-year-old father, Fran, of South Dennis said his son's empty boat was found near Provincetown yesterday.
Friends and family said Johnson was one of seven children. A longtime Cape Codder, he had two college-age daughters.
"He was funny and hard working," Labrie said. "He loved his daughters more than anything. They were his pride and joy, no doubt."
He did finish carpentry for Stello Construction Inc., according to Labrie, who added his friend took great pleasure from being on the water.
"It was his way of getting away, he loved to be out there," Labrie said.
Staff writer Doug Fraser contributed to this report.

David C. Johnson, 56
Devoted father; loved lobstering and woodworking
August 04, 2008 6:00 AM
DENNISPORT — David C. Johnson, 56, passed away on July 31, 2008. Born on Oct. 3, 1951 in Worcester, he was passionate about living on Cape Cod; being surrounded by the sea gave him the most pleasure.
To know him was undoubtedly to love him, for his unique sense of humor never failed to bring tears to your eyes with laughter. He had a deep love for music, nature, woodworking, and all things of the ocean. He worked for Stello Construction Inc. and despite being an extremely talented finish carpenter for the majority of his life, anyone who knew him would tell you that the two loves of his life were his daughters Eva and Olivia, and lobstering on his boat.
He is survived by his daughters Eva and Olivia Johnson and their mother Christine Johnson of Brewster; father Francis Johnson; two brothers Francis Jr. and Thomas Johnson; four sisters Judith Olson, Betty Padden, Penny Hetel, and Christine Messier; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his beloved mother Jean C. Johnson. Along with his adoring family, uncountable loving friends and neighbors will never be able to forget the sound of his laugh and the essence of his free spirit that we were all so blessed to have known.
A memorial service in honor of this devoted father, brother, son, and friend to all will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Doane, Beal, & Ames Funeral Home at 729 Route 134 in S. Dennis.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston MA 02115, Attn: Head & Neck Cancer.
"I dropped a tear in the ocean, and whenever they find it, I'll stop loving you, only then." - Anonymous
