"Missing Vessel.-- Schooner Empire State, (of Wellfleet) Paine Jenkins, master, sailed from Hampton Roads, March 25, for Boston, and has not since been heard from. Several vessels which sailed in company with her have arrived. A terrible gale, which lasted several days, came on soon after leaving port, and, it is supposed, she foundered or was run into by some other vessel. The crew consisted of five persons, viz.: Capt. Jenkins, and his oldest son, about 19 years of age; Barnabus young, 24 years; and two young men of 18 years of age, named Kinnekum and Myrick, all of Wellfleet. Mrs. Jenkins is left with five children and in feeble health. Mr. Young leaves a widow, to whom he had been married but a few weeks. Mr. Kinnekum, the father of one of the young men lost, had previously been afflicted by the drowning of two other of his sons. The Empire State was a new vessel, of about 70 tons, and was loaded rather deeply with oysters."

"Wellfleet--Hope is nearly abandoned for the schooner Empire State, Paine Jenkins, Master, which sailed from Hampton Roads for Boston March 25. Several vessels which sailed with her and have arrived, report that a terrible gale was encountered and that the Empire State probably foundered. The crew of five, all of Wellfleet, included Captain Jenkins and his young son, aged 10, Barabas Young and two men named Kinnecum and Myrick. The Empire State, 70 tons, was loaded rather deeply with oysters."
