CHILD:

i PATIENCE, b. say 1612; m. by 1632 HENRY COBB .

COMMENTS: James Hurst first appears in a dated record in the tax list of 25 March 1633, and from his position in the first list of freemen, he must have attained that status before 1 January 1632/3. But his arr ival can be placed even earlier based on the birth of his first grandchild. His only known child, Patience, married Henry Cobb, and their first child was born in Plymouth on 7 June 1632, which would place the marriage of Henry and Patience no later than September 1631. Although it is possible that the marriage took place in England, followed by migration to Plymouth in 1632, it seems more likely that Henry Cobb and Patience Hurst met in Plymouth, so that her father would have arrived in Plymouth by 1631. Given the record of his marriage in Amsterdam, he may well have been at Leiden, which would make it likely that he was part of the last contingent of the Leiden congregation which came over in 1629 and 1630.
After fifteen years of regular duty as a juryman, James Hurst came into court on 7 March 1653/4 and, along with three other men, sued Samuell Sturtivant and Edward Gray "in an action of trespass on the case, to the damage of ten pounds, for destroying a certain parcel of hay" belonging to the four plaintiffs; the court found for the plaintiffs [ PCR 7:68]" 5

ORLEANS — Police said they found 426 bags of heroin, packaged for sale, in the car of a Brewster teen early yesterday after a traffic stop on School Road, just off Main Street.

John K. Hurst, 19, was ordered held on $2,000 cash bail at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of trafficking in heroin.

The confiscated 17 grams of heroin would sell for about $15,000 on the street, Detective Kevin Higgins said yesterday.

The arrest is the second motor vehicle stop in three weeks to lead to the seizure of a large amount of heroin allegedly intended for sale on the Lower Cape.

Orleans police said that on Oct. 4 they found 76 bags of heroin, worth more than $2,200, when Jamison Rees, 19, was stopped on suspicion of driving with a suspended license on Route 6A in Orleans. He was ordered held on $2,500 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing heroin with intent to distribute.

Hurst was stopped by police about 12:30 a.m. yesterday after a random computer check showed that his 2006 Honda Accord's inspection sticker had expired Oct. 1. An up-to-date sticker was on the car but not yet logged in the state's computer system, according to a police report.

During the stop, Orleans police Officer Brian Carchedi reported he saw the orange tip of a hypodermic syringe and also saw a piece of blue waxed paper — about the size of two postage stamps — that is commonly used to package heroin.

When police searched the car, they found a plastic grocery bag full of waxed paper bags containing what police believe was heroin, as well as two boxes of unused syringes, Carchedi reported.

Police said they confiscated the car, $620 in cash and two cell phones allegedly with drug-related text messages.

Hurst, admittedly addicted to heroin, had the heroin for his personal consumption, his attorney, Jon Stetkis, told Judge Don L. Carpenter during yesterday's arraignment in Orleans District Court. Hurst, a graduate of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, lives with his parents and attends Cape Cod Community College, Stetkis said.

Hurst is due back in court Nov. 12.
