"Capt. Elisha Rich Atwood
Capt. ELisha Rich Atwood of Somerville passed away Dec. 16, after a year's sickness. The final illness lasted less than two days.
He was one of the few remaining Cape Cod seafaring men. Capt. Atwood was born in 1829 on Bound Brook Island, Wellfleet. He served as cook on board a mackerel schooner throughout a fishing season when he was only 12 years old. From that time on he followed the sea.
He married Ruby F. Taylor, daughter of Bangs and Olive Taylor of Orlenas.
When he was 22 he became captain of the Edward H. Norton, an oyster vessel in which he cruised hte Atlantic coast. Later he had the Warren J. Crosby built at the Essex shipyards. This vessel carried fruit from the tropics.
For twenry-eight years he lived at Port Antonio, Jamaica, B.W.I, where he acted as pilot, supercargo and wharf superintendent for the United Fruit company.
During the past seven years he made his home with the late William T. Lewis of Somerville,
The services were held at Capt. Atwood's home Dec. 18, Rev Otis W. Foys officiating. Interment was in the family lot in Orleans."
