DENNIS - Stephen (Steve) Frederick Hooper, 69, passed away peacefully at home in Dennis, on Friday, August 27, 2010. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Kathleen (Kate) (Peters), his son Lincoln and wife Mary of Brewster and his son Tyler and wife Jill of Amesbury. Steve leaves behind four grandchildren that he adored; Brandon, Jared (Peanut), Kayleigh and Delaney. Steve also leaves a brother, Paul Hooper of Framingham and two sisters, Amy Slattery of Seekonk and Sally Hall of Brewster.
A true "Cape Codder," Steve was born at home in Brewster on December 31, 1940, to the late, Paul and Dorothy Hooper. After high school, at 17, Steve joined the United States Navy serving on the USS Forrestal.
When Steve returned from the Navy, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic except for 10 years when he and Kate owned the Getty Station in Barnstable Village. They operated the full service gas station as a family, with many of their boys' early memories being of spending time with their dad at the station. When they sold the business, Steve returned to being a mechanic until he retired in December 2002.
Steve loved motorcycles, had a deep interest in aviation and had a passion for rebuilding old tractors. He enjoyed researching tractor parts, ordering and installing them, all with his little "Peanut" by his side. Steve loved his family and spending time with them, especially with his grandchildren.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held on September 18, 2010, from 1 to 3 p.m. Please call 508-237-6834 or 508-394-4776 for directions.
In lieu of flowers, a good deed for someone or some organization in memory of Steve would be appreciated.
