Everett A. "Red" Holbrook of Newburyport, a former Boy Scout leader, died Nov. 19 at Boston Medical Center. He was 78.
Born in Newburyport, he graduated from Newburyport High School in 1942. Mr. Holbrook was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Holbrook was employed at the former Saftel & Kaplan Leather Tannery of Newburyport, Gould Shawmut of Newburyport, and Shaheen Brothers Inc. of Amesbury.
He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 17 of St. Louis de Gonzague in Newburyport for 17 years and was an avid camper.
He leaves his wife, Therese M. (Marcoux) Holbrook of Newburyport; four daughters, Kathy Eaton of Newburyport, Terry Fontaine of Nashua, N.H., Mary Darling of Salisbury, and Ellie Barry of Merrimack, N.H.; two sons, Everett Holbrook of Skowhegan, Maine, and Anthony Holbrook of Amesbury; two sisters, Cora Sullivan of Newburyport, Ada Lawry of Portsmouth, N.H.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

"Ezekiel Holbrook was b. in Wellfleet, Mass., 1775. At the age of four years, his father having died, he was taken by his mother to Penobscot River. Being disappointed there in a chance for a livelihood, they came to Damariscotta, where Ezekiel was bound out to service. The abuse he was subjected to was such that at the age of 14 he ran away, following down the river, and hired with Benjamin Linekin. Here he remained until 1802, when he m. Lucy, dau. of his employer. She d. in 1805, and a year later he m. Dorcas, dau. of Jonathan Farnham. He d. Mar. 5, 1863; Lucy, 1st w., d. Oct. 28, 1805; Dorcas, 2d w., d. May 18, 1884, a. 96-5-27.
