Marriage Notes (Margaret Dewey)
EDMUND, from Hing. County of Norfolk, Eng., and b. in that parish, ab. 1570, was the ancestor of all who have borne this surname by birth in our Hing. or its vic. He arrived at Charlestown, 1633, and with his s. Thomas, and several others, came to "Bare Cove," the same yr. (See Lincoln's "History of Hingham," pp. 41 and 156), prob. for the purpose of assisting in establishing a new plantation or township. It is generally thought, however, that be did not locate here permanently until the arrival of his s. the Rev. Peter Hobart, and those who came with him. He was one of the early settlers who drew their houselots on Town (North) St., on the 18th of Sept. 1635; Edmund's lot being the 17th, while Nos. 18 and 19 were granted to two of his sons. His first w., Margaret Dewey, was the mother of his ch. His sec. w., whom he m. at Charlestown, Oct. 10, 1634, was Mrs. Sarah Lyford, the wid. of Rev. John Lyford. The dates of his, and of his sec. w.'s decease, are recorded in Hobart's Diary as foll.: "March 8, 1646, father Hubbeard dyed." "June 23, 1649, mother Hobart dyed." He, therefore, at the time of his decease, was ab. 76 yrs. of age. Resided opp. Hobart's Bridge, North St. Freeman, March 4, 1634; constable the same yr.; and in 1639, 1640, and 1642 a deputy to the Great and General Court.

[220] JOHN COMBS died Aug. 2 1732.
John Combs removed to Springfield 1713. Returned to Northampton many years after & was maintained by the Town. He came to Northampton about 1695. He was a fuller and cloth dresser & the first in the town. Had a fulling mill adjoining Bartlett's corn mill on the Manhan. Had clothing tools.

[ At its peak, Springfield embraced all of the land within the present boundaries of Springfield, Chicopee, Longmeadow, East Longmeadow, Wilbraham, Hampden, Ludlow, West Springfield, Agawam, Holyoke, Enfield, Suffield, and Somers (the last three in Connecticut), and parts of Westfield and Southwick.]

COOMBS FULLING MILL
John Coombs had permission in 1702 to set up a Fulling Mill on Mill River. Other grants for this purpose had been previously made, and in one case the grantees had failed to build. This grant was made on condition that : "He prejudice not any other mill already set up. Also that he damnifie no man in his propriety and also when said mill is rotten and he doth not repair it so as to make it serviseable so as to do the work of the Towne wch is brought to him to return to the Towne Again. And provided also that the said Coames go forth with about the setting up and finish of said mill so that it may be no hindrance to Any other person that may set up a fulling mill in case Comes shall faile"

Coombs had been living on South Street four or five years, and had been running a fulling mill near Bartlett's mill in EastHampton. He seems to have hired that mill of Sam Bartlett. His Fulling Mill was probably built on the Mill River near the vicinity of the Old Paper Mill (now the cutlery works of E.E. Wood), but the exact date or location cannot be given. It was long known as Coombs Mill, though he removed to Springfield in 1713.
