Richard Higgins arrived from England in 1633, settled in Eastham, then in Piscataway, New Jersey. Or, he lived in Salem between 1629-1632, before moving to Plymouth in 1633, then to Nauset in 1644.
He was a freeman in Plymouth, 1633: in Eastham, in 1655.
He was a founder of Piscataway, NJ.

HIGGINS Richard Higgins, the immigrant ancestor, settled in Plymouth,
Massachusetts, as early as 1633, when his name appears among the taxpayers
of that town. He was a tailor by trade and also a planter. In 1634 he was
admitted a freeman and was then a member of the church. In 1644 he left
Plymouth and with six others founded the town of Eastham on Cape Cod. His
name is on the list of men able to bear arms in 1643 at Plymouth. He became
a leading citizen of Eastham, of which he was a selectman for three years
and deputy to the general court in 1649, 1661 and 1667. He married (first)
at Plymouth, November 23, 1634, Lydia Chandler, daughter of Edward Chandler,
of Scituate, and (second) October 15, 1651, Mary Yates, widow of John Yates,
of Duxbury. Children: Jonathan, born July, 1637; Benjamin, mentioned below;
Mary, September 27, 1652; Eliakim, October 20, 1654; William, December 15,
1655; Jedediah, March 5, 1657; Zerviah, June, 1658; Thomas, January, 1661;
Lydia, July, 1664.

HARWICH - Richard Dean Lovell Higgins Jr., 65, a resident of Harwich, died Monday at Brewster Manor. He was the husband of Nancy (Flint) Higgins for 46 years. Mr. Higgins was born in Orleans and raised in Green Hills, Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating from Mount Herman in 1954. He received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served in the Marines for three years, playing piccolo, trumpet and flute for the Department of the Pacific Marine Corps Band stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco. He worked as an independent contractor on the Cape, designing and building custom homes for more than 30 years.
Mr. Higgins was a gifted musician and started his first band, a dance band, in 1953. He also played for the Harwich and Orleans town bands, for local musical productions with the Nauset Highlanders and formed the Clarion Brass Quintet.
Surviving besides his wife are his mother, Lillian Falk of South Orleans; two daughters, Julia O'Connell of Cotuit and Phyllis of Bricktown, N.J.; two sons, Richard Higgins III of Williamsville, N.Y., and Dr. Brian Higgins of Fort Lee, N.J.; a brother, Lowell Higgins of South Orleans; three sisters, Faith Chidester of Camp Hill, Pa., Kathy O'Day of Exton, Pa., and Sherry Heyd of Mashpee; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brewster. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
