Notes
General:
There were earlier prominent Atherton Houghs in Boston.

The Boston News Letter of August 25, 1737
"We hear that sometime in the beginning of July, that Captain Atherton Hough, master of a whaling vessel, being in the straights, killed a large whale and brought her to the Vessel's side as usual to cut her up, and as the hands were hoisting the Blubber into the hold, the runner of a block gave away, and fell with great force on the head of a man that stood underneath, viz. Benjamin Hamblen, of Eastham, Mass., and instantly Killed him."

See NEHGR, Oct 1985, page 299 - 301. "Edward Raynsford of Boston."

See NEHGR, Vol 84, Apr 1930, pages 151 - 152. "Boyles ...Occurances in Boston, 1759 - 1778."

These pages are a description of the great fire of 20 march, 1760. Among the houses lost in "Mackrel Lane, " which was intersected by King Street , were those of Atherton Hough, John Doane, and Paul Baxter's shop. This must have been Capt. Atherton Hough and his wife, Jane Collier Baxter Doane Hough, Jane's son John, who was a goldsmith of Boston (NEHGR, Vol 129, Apr 1975, page 169 -- See notes for him, and son Paul Baxter).

Atherton married Jane Collier , daughter of Lieut. Gershom Collier (ca 1673/4-19 Feb 1753) & Elizabeth Poole (15 Dec 1678-). Born on 10 Sep 1710 in Hull, MA.194 Jane died aft 1796.171
