DENNIS — Frances E. Walker, 85, died March 28. She was the wife of Daniel L. Walker for 63 years.
Mrs. Walker was born in Quincy, the daughter of Antonio and Assunta Grippi. She worked for Burgin & Platner Insurance Co. of Quincy. She married in 1944 and moved to Dennis, her husband’s hometown.
She was a member of the Altar Guild of the Immaculate Conception Church in Brewster, Girl Scouts, Christmas Tree Committee, the Rod and Gun Club of Yarmouth, and the Ladies Aid of Dennis Union Church.
Along with her husband, she was instrumental in establishing the first parochial school on Cape Cod, St. Joan of Arc School in Orleans. She chaired the penny sale fund-raising committee to help build Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster in the early 1960s.
An avid bowler, she was a member of Our Lady of the Cape candlepin bowling league. She enjoyed fishing and boating. She was an avid bowler and scored a hole-in-one while a member of the Dennis Pines Women’s Golf League. For many years, she was the warden of Precinct No. 1 in Dennis where many babies could be found in her arms while their parents voted.
Mrs. Walker worked for Clark, Potter and Sullivan Real Estate and retired from Edward J. McGrath Insurance Co. in 1985. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and vacationing in Florida.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Gail A. Puopolo of Barnstable, and Carol W. Bell of Dennis; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Grippi of Quincy, Fernanda Fencil of Carpenteria, Calif; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held April 4 at Dennis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Village Improvement Society of Dennis, P.O. Box 779, Dennis, MA 02638.
