Rev. Arnold officiated at Wellfleet marriages in 1812.Marriage Notes (Catharine)
"Rev. Robert Arnold came on this [Methodist preaching] circuit in 1812. He was a retiring, slow-speaking man, evidently studying to " rightly divide [divine?] the word of truth." Without developing great strength in any department of his work, he was a very good man; and this church had a few accessions under his labors. On the circuit there was an increase of twelve members during the year: there may have been more than that number of conversions.
It is said, that, on his way to South Truro one day, Brother Arnold stopped and took dinner with Theophilus Newcomb, or " Uncle Thorpe " as he was familiarly known. After enjoying a good meal, he went quietly on his lone way through the woods, until suddenly he came upon something by the side of the road, which looked to him very like a wild animal ready to spring upon him. He eyed it as closely as he could and not approach nearer, then retraced his steps, and reported at the house that he had seen some sort of a wild animal close by the road, and he was timid about going on alone. "Well," said Uncle Thorpe, taking down his gun, "I'll fix him;" and the two advanced toward Truro.
" Well, Brother Arnold, where is the beast ? " was several times asked, as they walked on. " Oh! we haven't yet come to the place where I saw him," the minister answered, evidently a little annoyed. At length, as they were going down into a valley, he pointed away to the right, and shouted, " There he is : don't you see him ? " Uncle Thorpe looked closely, and then said, " See him ? No. That is nothing but a pine stump. Come and see." And he advanced, and put his hand upon it. " This tree was torn up by the roots, and somebody in cutting it off has left quite a stump," he added. The good man was fully convinced, and laughingly went on to his appointment. All the people in Wellfleet and Truro soon learned of the incident; and many allusions to it were afterwards made in the presence of Brother Arnold, who always seemed to enjoy it as well as anybody.
From the Conference minutes we learn that Robert Arnold came into the New England Conference in 1809, and located in 1814. Further particulars could not be obtained."

Thomas Arundell, born about 1502, was the younger of the two sons of Sir John Arundell (c. 1474 to 8 February 1545) of Lanherne, Cornwall, and his first wife, Eleanor Grey (d. by December 1503), the daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset, by his second wife, Cecily Bonville. He had an elder brother, Sir John Arundell (c.1500 \endash 1557), and three sisters, Elizabeth Arundell (d. between 1516 and 1524), who married Sir Richard Edgcumbe, Jane Arundell (d.1577), and Eleanor Arundell. By his father's second marriage to Katherine Grenville (b. between 1489 and 1493),[1] the daughter of Sir Thomas Grenville (d.1513),[2] Arundell had a sister of the half blood, Mary Arundell, who married, firstly, Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex, and secondly, Henry FitzAlan, 19th Earl of Arundel. [3]
Arundell was educated at Lincoln's Inn, and began his career in the household of Cardinal Wolsey, where he was a contemporary of Thomas Cromwell. He was created a Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Queen Anne Boleyn.
Arundell held a number of administrative positions, principally in the West Country. He was the first receiver of the Court of Augmentations for Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, and in 1533 succeeded his father as Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall. He was a Justice of the Peace for Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, and was appointed to commissions for gaol delivery, oyer and terminer, and the defence of the western coastline. He commanded the Dorset militia during both the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536-7, and King Henry VIII's expedition to France in 1544. He was twice High Sheriff of Dorset and Somerset (1531), was keeper of the royal parks in Dorset, and in 1539 sat on the Council of the West with his father.
Both his cousin, Henry Grey, 3rd Marquess of Dorset, and Henry Percy, 6th Earl of Northumberland, employed Arundell in the management of their estates. He also served as receiver to Queen Anne of Cleves, and Chancellor of the Household to Queen Catherine Parr.[4]
Arundell's role as one of the commissioners for the dissolution of the monasteries in the West Country enabled him to acquire a number of former religious properties. In 1547 he purchased Wardour Castle in Wiltshire.[5]
Arundell was connected by birth and marriage to the crown and to several of the most important families in England, and by the time of the death of King Henry VIII was one of the most experienced government officers in England. However, those in power at the beginning of the reign of King Edward VI removed his name from the late King's list of proposed honours, reflecting their concern with his influence and his family's devotion to the old religion. Vague and unproven allegations of complicity in the south-western rebellion in 1549 were made against him and against his brother, Sir John Arundell (c.1550-1557), leading to their imprisonment in 1550 and again in 1551, and marking the end of Sir Thomas Arundell's career. In late 1551 he temporarily aligned himself with the Protector Somerset, thereby putting himself in conflict with John Dudley, Earl of Warwick. He was arrested and charged with conspiring to overthrow the government and murder the Earl. Arundell consistently protested his innocence, but was convicted, beheaded on Tower Hill on 26 February 1552, and buried in the church of St Peter ad Vincula. His property was confiscated, although in June 1552 the Crown began restoring it to his widow and, from 1553, to his son Matthew Arundell. His widow, Margaret, died 10 October 1571, and was buried at Tisbury, Wiltshire.[6]
