Notes
General:
"Thomas Arey ... died between 14 Feb 1816, the date of his will, and 20 Mar 1816, when letters of administration were granted to his son Joseph Arey. He married, about 1779, Rebecca Sparrow, daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Sparrow.
He resided at Orleans, where he was an active business man. For some time he conducted the tide mills built by his ancestors at what is known as Arey's Pond and used for the millling of corn. He engaged in the manufacture of salt by the evaporation of sea water, a business in his day of considerable importance at Orleans. His name appears frequently in the land records both as grantor and grantee. He acquired property at Harwich as well as at Orleans. The United States Census of 1800 places both him and his brother Oliver at Harwich.
After providing in his will that his land 'near Deacon Judah Rogers with a piece of woodland near the white rock, so-called, and a piece at grasst neck that I bought of Jas. Young' should be sold to pay for funeral charges, he bequeathed to his wife Rebecca Arey 'the improvement of all my salt works together with one-half of all my real estate so long as she shall remain my widow and one-half of my personal estate.' He left to his only surviving son, Joseph, the homestead land, with buildings, wagons, implements, etc., with the proviso that the widow should occupy half the house and have the use of half the barn and cow house so long as she remained a widow, and that his daughter Phebe should have the privilege of of living in the house so long as she remained single. In addition he gave various other pieces of land to Joseph, including land at Nemacock, land bought of Joseph Sparrow, meadow land on Sampson's Island Flat, meadow at the cartway and at the back neck, and all his woodland lot not otherwise disposed of by allowing the widow her share. Joseph was also to have the improvement of the salt works, after the widow ceased to use the same. To his daughter Phebe he bequeathed a piece of woodland near John Hurd's. The remainder of his personal estate was to be divided equally among his daughters Phebe, Rebecca, Sukey, and Mary, and his granddaughter Hannah, heir of his son Thomas, who was at that time deceased. Joseph was required to pay $20 apiece to Phebe, Rebecca, and Mary, one year after the death of the testator, and was named as sole executor." 26
