"He was a successful business man and is mentioned is various contemporary records as 'Esquire' and 'Gentleman.' He was a selectman of Wellfleet for eight years, beginning in 1819, and was afterwards postmaster at South Wellfleet. [Actually his son Reuben was postmaster.] His esate was appraised at $5,275.87, of which $2,456.87 was personal property. By his will one-third of his estate was left to his widow and the remainder was to be divided equally among his children or their heirs. The property mentioned in the will included real estate, salt works, an interest in Enterprise Wharf, a pew in the First Congregational Church, and also a pew in the Second Congregational Church." 22
