Deborah Howes Stewart, 71

Hyannis - Deborah Howes Stewart, 71, died May 2, 2007 at Cape Cod Hospital.

Mrs. Stewart was born Nov. 15, 1935 in Hyannis to Luther and Barbara (Taylor) Howes. Howes was editor of The Barnstable Patriot. She was the granddaughter of Herbert, president of Hyannis Normal School, and Cora (Luther) Howes. She was also the granddaughter of William and Lena (Sparrow) Taylor, owners of Taylor’s Restaurant in Provincetown.

Debbie grew up on the Cape, living in Provincetown, Hyannis and Cummaquid. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1953. After receiving her diploma from Cape Cod Secretarial School, she spent her career as a secretary and title examiner.

She served as a ‘’Foot Soldier” for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference/NAACP Voter Registration Project and as a facilitator and trainer at the Mercy Otis Warren Women’s Center. She was also clerk of corporation for the C&I Community Action Committee in the late 1970s and early 80s, a member of the Department of Mental Health’s C&I Site Board and a board member for DMH’s Southeast Area Citizens Advisory Board for 14 years before she retired. In addition, she supported the International Center for Clubhouse Development.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by her children, USAF Technical Sergeant Matthew Howes Stewart of Oahu, Hawaii and Annie Stewart Hartford of North Andover; her son-in-law, Glen; three grandchildren, Glen Jr., Brendan and Katherine Hartford; her sister and brother-in law, Suzanne Howes and John Stevens of Tolland, Conn.; three nieces, Christine Bearse, Nicole (Stevens) Haines, and Stacey (Bearse) Marino; and four grandnieces, Madeline Haines and Jennifer, Elizabeth and Allison Marino.

A memorial gathering was held May 6 at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to American Veterans AMVETS, Department of Massachusetts, 210 Park Ave, PMB 328, Worcester, MA 01609-2246.
