Notes
General:
Conficting information:
Edmund Freeman, was born ca. 1590 in Devonshire or Oxford, England. He arrived in Saugus (Lynn), Mass. on the Abigail in 1635 with his wife Elizabeth and children: Elizabeth (12), Alice (17), Edmund (15), and John (8). He was admitted freeman at Plymouth Jan 2, 1637 and resided a short time in Duxbury. He established the first English town on Cape Cod on Apr 3, 1637 along with 9 other men of Saugus. It was legally incorporated as what is now known as Sandwich in 1639. He was buried on his land in 1682, over looking Cape Cod Bay, and it has become the oldest burying place in Sandwich, Mass.
Elizabeth died a few years before him, on Feb.14, 1675/6. 2 huge stones mark their burial sites. He was buried on his own land on the hill in the rear of his dwelling. The site, though not greatly elevated, presents an extended view both of the surrounding landscape and bay in Sandwich, Mass. Inscriptions have been put on those stones in recent years. They read:
a". Elizabeth, wife of Edmond Freeman, born in England in 1600, and died in Sandwich 1675/6."
b". Edmond Freeman, born in England 1590, and died in Sandwich in 1682....A Founder of the town of Sandwich in 1637 and Assistant to Governor Bradford 1640-1647."
    c. These stones are in the woods near the junction of Sandwich Road and Route 6. His wife was said to have been Elizabeth Bennett. Their children were:
         Alice:b.England 1618.
         Edmond:bapt. England Nov 26, 1620.
         Bennet:    "          "      Jan 20, 1621.
         Elizabeth: "          "      Apr 11, 1624.
         John:        "          "      Jan 28, 1626/7.
         Nathaniel: "          "      Sept 2, 1629.
         Mary.
         Cycellia: b 1631.

Another version of the origins of Edmund Freeman: he was born in Pulborough, Essex, England ca. 1594 and died ca. 1686 in Sandwich, Mass. He married Elizabeth Gravely on Oct 13, 1617 in Herts, England, and this was probably his 2nd marriage. Elizabeth died in Sandwich on Feb 14, 1676. He was Deputy for Plymouth Colony in 1641; Assistant to Governor Prence 1640-1646; a member of the Council of War in 1642; and later served as a judge.
His father was also named Edmund Freeman and he was buried on June 6, 1623 in Pulborough, Essex, England. His will was proved on June 8, 1623.He was married to Alice Coles, a sister of George Coles, of Amberly, Essex, England. 21

Notes
General:
From the article in 'American Genealogist' V. 40: 'Edmond Freeman was a Deputy to the General Court of Sandwich for seven years, from 1669-1686, while his brother John served as Assistant, 1666-1686, 1689-1691; during the earlier years of their service, Thomas Prence was Governor. In a deed dated 29 Apr 1674 'Edmont ffreeman Junr. of Sandwich in the Colony of New Plimouth in America for a fatherly affection unto my son Joseph Burge and my daughter Patience the wife of Joseph Burge aforesd & according to my promise att their marriage Doe give freely ... one moyetee of upland ... in Sandwich, being formerly in the possession of Edmond ffreeman Senr. ... six acres ... doe give unto my son in law Joseph Burge ... (etc). On 2 Mar 1674/5'... 'Margarett freeman his wife appeared and gave up ... all her right in the meadow herein specified.' (Plym Col. Recs. 5, pt. 2:379)' After the death of his father, he, having a son named Edmond, became known as 'Senr.' There are several deeds and court records showing a difficulty arose between this Edmond and his son, Edmond over his estate. It shows he had become concerned that he may have inadvertently given all his estate to Edmond and had nothing to give to his daughters. The case was decided that he had not legally given Edmond all of it. The article in 'The American Genealogist' gives the case in more detail. The records are important in that they give several relationships which had not before appeared in printed accounts.
