Marriage Notes (Rev William Witherell)
"Witherell, also spelled Weatherwell or Witherle. In England William was a schoolmaster in Maidstone, Kent, England, having received his baccalaureate degree from Bennet (Corpus Christi) College, Cambridge University in Jan., 1623 and his A. m. at 1626. In New England he taught grammar school in Charlestown, Mass. in 1636. He preached for a time in Duxbury, and in Sept., 1644 became minister of the church in Scituate, Mass.; sworn a freeman June 1, 1658.

William "was the first pastor of the Second Church in Scituate. He came in the ship 'Hercules' of Sandwich, 200 tons, John Witherly, master, from Maidstone, England, with his wife Mary, three children and one servant, on certificates dated Mar. 1634. He had formerly resided in Sollolk. His house stood a few rods southeast of the meeting house, which was 'fifty rods east of Stony Cove Brook,' on the crest of Wilson Hill, and was his residence during the thirty-nine years of his ministry. He died in 1684. Persons from neighboring towns brought their children to him for baptism, probably because their own ministers were opposed to infant sprinkling. Among them were the families of Rogers of Marshfield, Nathaniel and Josiah Winslow (the Governor), and Kenhelm Winslow (Governor Edward Winslow's brother) from Yarmouth."

On 26 Mar 1627 William married Mary Fisher, daughter of Thomas Fisher (19 Nov 1564-2 Apr 1608) & Joan Lake (20 Dec 1576-), at St Mildred's Cathedral, Canterbury. Born on 17 Apr 1604 at Boughton-Monchelse, Kent. Mary died at Scituate, Mass., bef 26 Mar 1684." 5

REVEREND NATHANIEL FISHER, M.A.

Reverend Nathaniel Fisher was born in Dedham, Mass., July 8, 1742. His father was a farmer of that place, and one of his sisters was the mother of Fisher Ames. Mr. Fisher was graduated at Harvard College in 1763. For some years he was in the service of the S. P. G., as schoolmaster at Granville. May 13, 1777. He was recommended to the Society "as a man of learning and good sense, of unexceptionable character, and worthy of being admitted to holy orders, as an assistant to the Rev. Mr. Wood of Annapolis." He crossed the Atlantic, was ordained by Bishop Lowth, and by him licensed as Mr. Wood's assistant. Early in 1778, the year of Mr. Wood's death, he arrived in Nova Scotia, and although the Rev. Joshua Wingate Weeks was appointed to the church at Annapolis and Granviile, he assumed the charge which he continued to hold till the close of 1781. He then returned to New England, and February 24, 1782, entered on his duties as rector of St. Peter's Church, Salem. There he remained until his death, on Sunday, December 20, 1812. He was buried in Salem. His wife was Silence Baker, of Dedham, by whom he had two sons and daughter. One of his sisters was the mother of Fisher Ames. 7

"Sad and Fatal Accident at Eastham.
While a party from Holliston stopping at Mr. Elisha Cobb's, were out in a boat gunning on Wednesday, one of them, Mr. Robert Fisher, was throwing out the anchor when the rhode caught on the hammer of his gun and drew it back sufficiently to cause it, upon springing back, to discharge the gun. The charge entered his body, causing his death in about three hours. He was about 20 years old, and leaves a wife and an adopted daughter." - Barnstable Patriot, 7 sep 1875 9
