MASHPEE - Drummers played the traveling song, smudge smoke wafted in the air and her mother wailed, “Alicia, my baby, I love you so much.”

With that, Army Staff Sgt. Alicia (Finklea) Birchett was laid to rest in an Eastern poplar casket in the Old Indian Cemetery this morning.
Birchett, 29, died when she was changing a tire Aug. 9 in Baghdad when the brakes failed on the truck, according to her family.

Military honors and Native American ritual converged in a heart-breaking ceremony yesterday at her grave.

Birchett came from a large Wampanoag family that included at least 20 aunts and uncles and that’s just on the side of her grandfather, Warren Hicks.

She had more than 100 cousins. Most of them seemed to be there yesterday. They formed a huge mass around Birchett’s grieving mother, Dorothea (Jackson) Finklea, of Wareham.

Even when greeted by Gov. Deval Patrick, Finklea continued to sob.
Birchett, or “Little Brown Bee,” also leaves a husband, Joe Louis Birchett, and three sons: Joe Louis Brichett III, 8, Julian X. Birchett, 3, and Silas V. Birchett, 2, all of Waynesboro, Tenn.

At least 40 Patriot Guard Riders, motorcyclists who attend funerals of fallen soldiers, formed a wall of leather jackets and American flags behind the mourners.

About nine members of Brichett’s unit, the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky. lined up on the left of the mourners. An honor guard from Fort Drum, N.Y., shot off a volley and played taps.

A woman near the casket became ill and had to be led out of the cemetery.

“She was strong,” said Sgt. Clint Wilson, one of Birchett’s co-workers at the Fort Campbell base. “You didn’t tell her what to do. She told you what to do.”

Cape Cod Times obit, 25 Aug 2010
EASTHAM \emdash Seth Adam Finlay, 36, born and raised a true Cape Codder who traced his roots to Elder Brewster and the Mayflower.

He was proud to have two wonderful children, Seth Adam, II and Sara May to impart all of his vast knowledge and wisdom of his heritage.

Seth, an avid outdoorsman, spent most of his time with his loving family, gardening, fishing, hunting and cooking. Seth was a two-time BBQ champion who with his team partner and best friend Scott Johnson hosted a pig roast every October in Fryeburg, Maine, at the family vacation property. Seth also has many friends in Man-O-War Cay, Abaco, Bahamas, where he spent many winter vacations with his family at his father-in-law's, Tom Dill's home. Their prayers are with Seth and the Finlay family.

Seth is survived by his wife of over 10 years Sacha Dill Finlay of Eastham, his twin children Seth Adam Finlay II and Sara May Finlay. Also his mother Sandra Caton Finlay, younger sister Hannah Corin Finlay, father-in-law Thomas Dill, mother-in-law Ginger Dill, sister-in-law Tamra Milliken, grandfather Arthur R. Finlay Jr., and his beloved dog Miller and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Seth lived for his family and touched many lives, personally and professionally. He worked as an electrician for 20 years for his father, Master Electrician Edward A. Finlay, who predeceased Seth in January 2010. He took pride in everything he did but his family always came first.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to a trust for Seth's children's college fund at sethandsaratrust@hotmail.com.

Services will be held at United Methodist Church of Orleans at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 12, 2010, followed by a reception at Seth and Sacha Finlay's home.
