Notes
General:
"Not much is known about Jacob Ames, who served in the war of the Revolution in the Massachusetts Militia. He was born about 1759, his pension record showing he was 76 years old in 1835. At that date he was residing in Kennebec. By June 1, 1840, he was residing at Cape Rosier in the household of Robert Redman. He was then 83 years old. Mr. Ames died in Brooksville Sept. 27, 1843. His wife was Elizabeth, b. about 1749 and died Jan. 20, 1831, age 82. They left descendants in the area, but their children's names are unknown.
James B. Ames is reputed to have been a Revolutionary War veteran from Brooksville, but nothing has been found concerning him."

Notes
General:
Jesse Ames was born at Vinalhaven, once in Hancock, now in Knox County, Maine, on the 4th of February 1808. His parents were John and Hannah Perry Ames. The Ameses first settled in Massachusetts, and members of this immediate branch went from Marshfield, or that vicinity, to Maine about 1760. Jesse had some experience of life on the ocean before he was fourteen years old, and at sixteen, he went before the mast. At twenty-three years of age he had command of a schooner, a merchant craft, and for twenty-nine or thirty years was captain of different ships, brigs, barques or schooners, all of them in mercantile trade. He made between twenty and thirty voyages to Europe; repeatedly visited both sides of the South American coast; went round the world twice, his wife accompanying him both times, and has, it is likely, seen as much of the world as any man whose home is now in the " North Star State." During all the time he was in command of a sailing craft he lost only one man, who fell from aloft off Cape of Good Hope, and one brig, lost, when he was quite young, on the Bermudas. In 1861 Captain Ames made his last voyage, coming from New Zealand to London, there selling his ship, the Lizzie Spaulding, and returning home. Having a son in Minnesota, he visited the state, and concluded to here cast anchor for life. After farming two or three seasons in Rice County, he located in the beautiful town, now full-blown city, of Northfield. In December 1864, Mr. Ames and his sons purchased the flouring mills at this place, and the " Northfield" brand of flour, made by Jesse Ames and Sons, and now by Jesse Ames' Sons, has long been well known and in high repute in the eastern and European markets. In 1861, to please his republican constituents, Mr. Ames served them in the legislature, but the business was distasteful to him and he made one term suffice. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. On the 27th of October 1832, Miss Martha Tolman, daughter of a sea captain, Thomas Tolman, of Rockland, Maine, became the wife of Captain Ames, and they have two sons. John T. Ames, the elder, has a family, and is one of the leading businessmen of Northfield. The other son, Adelbert Ames, graduated at West Point in 1861; went directly into the army; was wounded in the thigh at the first battle of Bull Run; served through the war, and was promoted through every grade from second lieutenant to brigadier-general, and breveted major-general. Since the close of the war he has been a United States senator from Mississippi, and governor of that state.
