SOUTH CHATHAM--Hazel "Haz" Lillian (Eldredge) Baker, 61, died Nov. 26. She was the wife of Robert C. Baker.
Mrs. Baker was born at Cape Cod Hospital. She was raised and lived her entire life in South Chatham. She was proud to say she was a multigenerational Cape Codder. During her youth she was a member of the Rainbow Girls, participated in the Girl Scouts and spent many hours rowing a dory in Stage Harbor while her father was packing fish from his weir trap business. She graduated from Chatham High School in 1965 where she played field hockey, softball, basketball and was involved with the drama club, chorus and student council. She was a sports enthusiast and was a member of Red Sox Nation. She attended Paul Smith's College, N.Y. and graduated from Newbury College in Boston, with a Business degree in 1968.
She married South Chatham native and high school sweetheart. Robert C. Baker in 1969. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Some of her work experience included being a waitress and cook at Ron's Sandwich Shop in Chatham, opening scallops with her husband, waitressed at Breakaway Cafe, prep cook/caterer for Fancy's Farm Market and seasonal house/cottage cleaner. Her love of children led her to teach at South Chatham Community Church Nursery school for over 25 years. During her tenure, she was a teacher and co-directed the school for the last 15 years until it's closure in 1997. From 1997 to present, she was a caregiver for a number of Chatham residents.
Mrs. Baker was a member of South Chatham Community Church. She served as a deacon, was on the Christian Education Committee and taught Sunday school. She was an active member of AFS from 1996 to 2007. Friday nights during the summer at Kate Gould Park she sold balloons to raise money for the organization. She coached and directed the Chatham Girls Youth Softball League from 1981 through the mid-1990's, was a Girl Scout Leader for six years during the 1990s and a member of the South Chatham Village Hall Family Circle.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Amy Carlson of Kingston; her mother, Lillian Eldredge of South Chatham; her brothers, John Eldredge of South Chatham, Ernie Eldredge of Chatham; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. in South Chatham Community Church, Main Street, South Chatham. Memorial donations may be made to Tufts Medical Center, c/o Stephen J. Perna, 800 Washington St., Box #231, Boston, MA 02111, for the purchase of new furniture on Proger 5 North for family and friends of hospital patients.
