"William Doane was a seaman for several years, at first sailing as mate with his brother Capt. Joseph Doane, but later was in command of vessels. He went to Brookfield, Mass., about 1798, where he purchased of Rufus Hardy six and one-half acres, with house, barn and blacksmith shop, north of the burying yard. In company with his brother-in-law, Royal Tyler, he opened a store and conducted a mercantile business in the town of Ware."
