Notes
General:
Provincetown did not exist as an incorporated town until 1727, and Elisha does not have a Provincetown birth record. The town of Truro was incorporated in 1709 (previously known as Dangerfield, from 1705), and managed some affairs of the unincorporated Province lands until Provincetown was incorporated. There may have been some records kept by, and legal control by Eastham.
Pratt's History (p 114) says Elisha's father was John Doane, of what is now Wellfleet:
"John Doane settled in the north part of Eastham before 1700. He had two brothers, who came from England with him, one of whom settled in Virginia, and was the ancestor of those of this name in the Southern slates, and among his descendants is Bishop Doane, of New Jersey. The other settled in Canada, and nothing further is known of him.
In 1723, John Doane was a justice of the peace, and held a distinguished rank in the town.
Elisha Doane was the son of the preceding. He married Miss Cole, and had three sons, Elisha, Joseph and Hezekiah. Joseph settled in Chatham, and the other two in this town."

Elisha was born in that part of Eastham which is now Wellfleet on June 23, 1725, and died of apoplexy in Boston on Jan. 25, 1783. He married first, at Wellfleet, by Rev. Isaiah Lewis, Feb. 22, 1743-4, Hope Rich, born May 7, 1725 and died June 23, 1766, the daughter of Dea. John and Hope (Howes) Rich, of Wellfleet. Married second, Dec. 25, 1768, Ann Doane, born in Boston, Sept. 8, 1744 and died at Jamaica Plain (Boston) Mass on July 9, 1849, the youngest daughter of John and Jane (Collier) Doane of Wellfleet and Boston.
Elisha Doane was an ensign of his father's company at Louisbourg after the surrender of that stronghold in 1745. He was a prominent man in Wellfleet and in Barnstable County; a Justice of the Peace; a Colonel of militia; Precinct treasurer from 1760 to 1762; district clerk and treasurer from 1763 to 1773; a representative to the general court from 1766 to 1768, 1781 and 1782; a selectman from 1763 to 1771. He was a Massachusetts senator for a number of years, and it was said that he commanded more respect, and exerted greater influence in that body than any other member. He was largely engaged in the whale fishery in his early life, but later was occupied in other affairs and spent most of his time in Boston. He accumulated a large fortune, estimated at 100,000 Pounds. In "Dwight's Travels" it is said: "Col. Doane of Wellfleet, and Thomas Boyleston of Boston were estimated by their fellow citizens as the two richest men in the Province of Mass. Bay."
The latter part of his life Col. Doane resided chiefly in Boston, where he was engaged in commerce and where he had a handsome house and delighted in receiving and entertaining his friends. He was a man of great charm of manner, it was said, but of strong character and the strictest integrity. His remains are located in the Doane Tomb, No. 12, in the lower level of King's Chapel, in Boston.
From Pratt's History:
Elisha Doane married for his first wife Hope Rich, who possessed a strong, masculine, but benevolent mind. They had three sons and two daughters, viz. Isaiah, who married Miss Bartlett, of Plymouth; Elisha, married Miss Cutler, of Boston; John, married Miss Holmes, of Boston; Hope, married Doct. Samuel Savage, of Barnstable, and had five sons, and one daughter, who married Hon. Lemuel Shaw, chief justice of the Supreme Court; Hannah, married the Hon. Shearjashub Bourne, of Barnstable, member of Congress, 1790.
Col. Elisha Doane was extensively engaged in the whale fishery for many years. He represented the town in the General Court, and the county as senator, a number of years. In this body he is said to have commanded more respect and exerted a greater influence than any other member.
He possessed a strong mind and sound judgment. In the latter part of his life he lived mostly in Boston, where he engaged extensively in commerce, and in the whale and other fisheries, by which he accumulated a very large fortune. At his death, his possessions in Boston, Wellfleet and other places were estimated at £120,000 sterling. He was the richest man in Massachusetts.
His second wife was Nancy Hoff, of Boston, who afterwards married Daniel Stoddard Greenough, and removed to Roxbury.

Petition to the Massachusetts General Court, Sept 1775
The Petition of Elisha Cobb, of Wellfleet, in the County of Barnstable, most humbly sheweth. That a number of whaling vessels is now preparing for sea, owned and possessed by Elisha Doane, Esq., Ezekiel Holbrook, Hezekiah Doane, Eleazer Atwood, and Naaman Holbrook and Company: “Your petitioner, therefore, in behalf of theaforesaid gentlemen, most humbly prays this honourable Court to take into consideration the great necessity of the whale fishery at this day, and grant them liberty of proceeding on their voyage; they complying with the order of this honourable Court, which they are always ready to obey. Your petitioner would further represent, that, should this honourable Court neglect granting the desire aforesaid, a large number of the inhabitants of said County will be unemployed in any sort of business; and as a number of said vessels hath been preparing for the employ aforesaid, your petitioner humbly hopes the aforesaid petition will be granted. And, as in duty bound, shall ever pray.
Resolved, That the Petitioners abovementioned, and all others who have Vessels fitting out for the Whale Fishery, be, and they hereby are permitted to send their Vessels out on said Fishery, they taking on board no more Provisions than is necessary for said voyages, in the judgment of the Selectmen of the Towns from whence they sail, and giving bond to the Receiver-General of this Colony, in the sum of two thousand Pounds for each Vessel, that they will carry out no more Provisions than is hereby allowed; and that said Vessels, with their Cargoes, return to some Port in this Colony, and there land the same, the Ports of Boston and Nantucket excepted.
In Council, September 27, 1775: Read and concurred.
[A concurrent petition by Stephen Hussey et al, of Nantucket, was also granted]
