ORLEANS — Not much ever changes at Nonnie's Country Kitchen in Orleans center.

Up at 2:30 a.m., Leonora "Nonnie" Degnan still ties on her black apron about 3:30 a.m. six days a week. "Five o'clock Bob" reads the paper with his coffee every day. Her other regulars show up at their usual times and start teasing her as she automatically gets their oatmeal, eggs, toast, pancakes or waffles, adds up bills in her head, and builds up a wad of tips in her apron pocket.

After 42 years behind the L-shaped breakfast counter, Degnan, 86, pretty much knows who is coming in, where they will sit, what they will order and what they will say.

Until yesterday.

Degnan didn't know what was going on about 8:30 a.m. when fiddler Denya Levine led a procession of customers and family into the suspiciously crowded restaurant.

"It's Friends of Nonnie Day," Kendall Farrar of Orleans said, holding a square, wrapped present with her name on it.

Degnan looked at the gift, shaped like a painting. She had gone twice recently to Tree's Place, a local gallery, to see an oil painting. Her painting.

Painter Taylor Fox of Orleans had painstakenly re-created her breakfast counter down to its chipped turquoise wood chairs and Formica top, the posted specials and the plates covering the walls. Early one April morning, Fox snapped a photo as Degnan sat in her place at the counter's end, daughter Ginny Kitch straightened a plate and Bob read away.

"Oh, I wanted it so bad, and I couldn't afford it," said Degnan, happy at the time to get a photo of the artwork.

The painting was too special to be taken out of Orleans, Farrar told her yesterday. He and fellow patrons John Wherry and Chester Robinson got busy a few weeks ago.

Over three to four days, as Degnan wiped and cleared counters, 45 patrons quietly chipped in the $2,800 needed to buy and frame the painting, thanks to substantial discounts by Tree's owner Donna Steele and the Frame Shop, Farrar said.

As the engraved plaque states, the Friends of Nonnie (FON) acquired the painting "to preserve and protect for all time this icon of the history and culture of the town of Orleans and its beloved and revered matriarch."

"I am so surprised," Degnan said, wiping away rare tears.

There was even enough money left over to buy a round of free coffee for cheering patrons who settled down to talk about Degnan. She said she would retire at 85, but hasn't. Her family made her cut back to working six days a week for the summer. Anyway, each winter, the place closes on Mondays.

"When she closes for the month of February each year, a black cloud descends over Orleans," diner Joanne Schofield said, "and we all stumble around and try to figure out what to do."

In 1994, people mourned briefly when Degnan closed Nonnie's, then open for breakfast and lunch. When plans for a store fell through, she reopened, but for breakfast only.

The next big change at Nonnie's will be the hanging of the painting, in its own case to protect it from passing syrup, juice and coffee. Kitch said she hopes the painting will end up among other town treasures at the Orleans Historical Society.

Then museum-goers can learn about the one-of-a-kind waitress, who once called unfiltered Lucky Strikes "my vitamins," and her restaurant, where a clanging bell let hungry diners know a hot breakfast was on its way.

Cape Cod Times obit:

Richardson, Berry Delahanty
BREWSTER - Berry Delahanty Richardson passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 29, 2007, at her residence in Brewster after a long illness.

For more than 60 years, Mrs. Richardson was part of The Cape Cod Sea Camps, Monomoy and Wono, which had been founded by her parents in 1922. She devoted her life to serving youth, and continued her parents' commitment to innovative, creative children's camping, not only through her direction of Monomoy and Wono, but also as a leader in both the New England and national organizations of the American Camp Association (ACA). She was an early proponent of Camp Standards, and for many years visited New England camps that were seeking ACA accreditation. She was known for careful observation and for offering helpful advice to other people in the camp business.

At The Cape Cod Sea Camps, Mrs. Richardson succeeded her mother, Emma Berry Delahanty, as executive director upon Mrs. Delahanty's retirement in 1971. She essentially recreated Monomoy and Wono, which had been two completely separate camps, one for boys, founded in 1922, the other for girls, founded in 1939. Over time, she led the melding of the two organizations, culminating with the creation of one co-educational camp on what formerly had been the Camp Wono campus.

Additionally, she directed increased emphasis on the day camp program, resulting in the Monomoy Day Camp, which now serves hundreds of Cape Cod children every summer with a non-residential camp program. Today, The Cape Cod Sea Camps attract children from many different states, and from countries around the globe. Mrs. Richardson was proud of her stewardship of her parents' legacy, and, upon her own retirement in 2002, continued to serve as Director Emerita, sharing her advice and counsel with the family members and colleagues who succeeded her.

In addition to her profession, Mrs. Richardson served for many years as a member of the Town of Brewster Finance Committee. She also served as a Trustee of The Latham School, and as a Trustee of the Brewster Conservation Trust, among other community involvements.

Mrs. Richardson was born in Hanover, N.H., where her father, Robert J. Delahanty, was a professor at Dartmouth College. She attended the Hanover Schools and was a graduate of Skidmore College. Upon Professor Delahanty's retirement in 1946, the family moved to Brewster.

Mrs. Richardson had been the wife of the late Edward E. ''Eliot” Richardson. She was predeceased by her younger son, James E. Richardson; and her grandson, James R. Richardson of Brewster. She is survived by her elder son, Robert B. Richardson of Los Angeles; three granddaughters, Kanchan, Maya, and BB; a stepgrandson, Travis; three nieces; greatnieces and nephews; great-great nieces; and thousands of campers who knew her simply as ''Berry.”

Berry's elder sister, Frances Garran, late of Barnstable, said about her sister at Berry's retirement dinner in 2002: '' - Berry has been a voice for the children. Not at the children, but for the children.” That eloquent, laconic description describes a lady who spent her life serving youth.

Funeral arrangements will be private. There will be a memorial service this summer at the former Delahanty Chapel, located on the grounds of Nickerson State Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grant W. Koch Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1404, Brewster, MA 02631.
